The Bottom Line If you need to resurrect your old Dual or PE w/Shure M75E, M91E or M91ED...KABUSA offers a superb generic that absolutely must be considered a true bargain!!
Alright...first of all...I must explain to you that I haven't been as absent from this wonderful site as I might have actually appeared to be in recent days. I'm involved in alotta work and a few side projects while being the proverbial "Fool On The Hill" watching the world go by. I tend to be tunnel-visioned when Football season comes around and our local boys are enjoying one of the greatest seasons Glen Ridge has ever experienced and yours truly has the privilege and honor of filming these games with it all climaxing with the upcoming Thanksgiving Day game to be played at the legendary Codey Field against Immaculate Conception HS Of Montclair, NJ. Aside from this little bit 'o an excuse to develop ah...er...um writer's cramp...I have actually been lining up some great stuff to talk about. In particular...a great recent find regarding a suitable generic replacement stylus for an old Shure M75E and M91E phono cartridge. As most of you who own old Shure cartridges know...the original OEM styli are getting more scarce by the day as Shure has deemed it necessary to discontinue their manufacture. Just about all NOS is either depleted or darn too near so! All too often...the generic replacements fall way too short of the Shure OEM mark. No wonder Shure was so emphatic about purchasing their original Dynetic styli. The generics in general sound raspy with poor tracking ability while sporting poor to fair stereo separation. That clean natural Shure sound goes right out the proverbial window when using these not even second rate so-called replacement needles. However...there is at least one company just right down the road from my present address that seems to take the science of sound reproduction a tad more seriously than other classic hi-fi suppliers...Kab Electro Acoustics or www.kabusa.com when contacting their internet business. The benevolent dealer offers Shure generic replacement styli for their Hi-Track customers. The real difference here being that these styli are well constructed with proper compliance and excellent "Trackability"...at least as good as the originals or better! The two styli I purchased cost me all of $23 each w/s+h and NJ sales tax. Both are hand made in Japan and although they use Phanstiehl "The Generic" part numbers...that is where all similarity ends. On both the M75E and M91E while mounted in my PE 3048 table...the sound was superb although not equal to the etching of my recently reviewed Shure M97xE. Interesting to note here is the use of an elliptical .003 x .007 shape as opposed to the OEM .002 x .007 geometry. Here is where I believe the slightly milder ellipse to be superior when caring for your precious vinyl. And although as in the case of the M75E's generic...the required TTF is 2 grams as opposed to the OEM 1.25 gram rating...the sound and transient response is so clean and fast that you'll not miss the lower TTF at all! In fact...I found the M75E to be more stable with this new stylus. It definitely is an upgrade from the Shure OEM. Oddly enough...the M91E's generic although boasting the same geometry...does indeed sport a more compliant cantilever rendering 1.25 grams as optimum TTF...right where Shure's OEM was! But be assured they both sound wonderful! No harsh sibilants here but loads of musicality with good solid soundstaging. I couldn't help but notice that the output of these two classic carts were noticeably higher than the current M97xE's. This is neither here nor there as far as I am concerned but may be of interest to a fellow enthusiast who owns a low or high sensitivity phono preamp input. At any rate...I just wanted to pass this bit o' info on to you just in case {like the Supremes once said} you got an "itchin' in your heart" to bustout that ole classic Dual w/Shure cart to hear some nostalgic holiday vinyl cheer once again!...Peter |
