Hi Echo

I certainly take no offense at your considering this epistle as perhaps being off topic.

My view is that a countries psyche is reflected in it's leadership and to that extent it is useful to comment when a significant and/or unexpected change occurs.

Hence my posting under "General Itineries" and not some Australia specific heading. Perhaps there should be a political category for each country!

Anyway again no offense taken.

regards

Peter

Hi Gary

Interesting to see Kevin Rudd has been painted as wanting to "upset the status quo".

As much as I am a John Howard supporter I don't think your media/politicians have got that quite right.

There are quite a few differences in attitude between Australia and the USA but as John Howard always said we should concentrate on what unites us, rather than what divides us.

Personally I doubt we will see any really significant difference to the status quo but perhaps the differences will be highlighted with your forthcoming elections - e.g. the Taiwan issue and Rudd's desire to increase involvement in Afghanistan and lessen the commitment to Iraq.

However time will tell!

thanks for your comment

Hi Peter,
I applaud the Australian system. The US could take a cue on the campaign financing system.
I was distressed at the news of the outcome. The new guy was made to sound like he is bent on upsetting the status quo. Made me think of the less than friendly New Zealand government regarding America. I hope that won't be the case.

I became a great admirer of John Howard these past few years. He will be missed, and may God bless him for his courageous support over the years. Wish he could have been in the White House.

Later,

Gary

if this was Off Topic or not, especially as others have rated Very Helpful, which I think it is, however, perhaps this is more for a Writers' Corner that under general itineraries. If you move this review or have any feedback for me, please let me know (and know that I love your reviews, so please don't take offense at my rating!)

All you epinioners have to understand we have had long discussions on the separate democracies of our countries. I have to admit that Australia has a unique form of government and I think that is great. Getting almost 100% of voters participating is amazing.

I praise their system as being fairly close political where we are moving further and further apart. At one time in my history here on earth we were closer together in thinking politically now hate and discord prevails.

Thanks for filling me in on your thoughts of this great election. I am sure you are correct not many things will change.

Take Care Ole Friend and say hello to Sue.
