Hiya Vasilis!
Heh, heh, it's a rather long glimpse indeed, bro. ;o) But then the German and the French opera tend to be longer than their Italian counterparts, so I guess the rambling length of this overview sort of matches its subject. ;o)

Thanks a bunch for taking time off from your busy days to stop by!!

Cheerio,

Thanks a bunch for stopping by! :o) Youtube has really been a great place for me to check out singers I hadn't heard before. I'm very glad to hear that the clips help you appreciate the piece better. :o)

Oh, you're right about Tristan und Isolde indeed, Telynor. It's a torture to sit through if you don't have a good (both singing and acting) Isolde on stage. Then she can really blow ya' away with the ending Liebestod (especially if it's Birgit Nilsson or Astrid Varnay... I think nowadays the great Isolde are Waltraud Meier and Deborah Voigt).

And Kiri was a wonderful Marschallin, too! I'm afraid I don't like Salome much (oddly enough I like Elektra more, even with more dissonance music and one-dimensionally morbid story line). Mozart, I'm lumping him in with the 3 Bel Canto guys, actually. ;o) Especially since the few German language opera he wrote were Singspielen that don't really fit with the Wagner or Strauss opera.

Thanks again for stopping by! Hope the week is going well your way!

Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

Lovely list (Reply to this comment)

It's funny but one about the only opera by Wagner that I can tolerate sitting through is Tristan und Isolde. That last bit -- if it's well done, it's gorgeous. And Der Rosenkavalier is wonderful -- I have a very soft spot for Kiri Te Kanawa in the role of the Marschallin. Salome is another Strauss opera that I like. Funny that you didn't mention any Mozart in there -- or do you consider him to be an Italian composer? Once again, an excellent list. -- Telynor
