| phack's Full Review: Hewlett Packard PhotoSmart p1000 Ink-jet Printer |
When I decided to go shopping for a new printer, I had in mind either a laser jet or a high quality ink jet in order to print my digital photos. After some research, I did not want to spend the amount of money it would take for me to get a quality Laser jet so I opted for the ink jet. I researched for a long time and came up with the HP PhotoSmart P1000. It is the low end of the PhotoSmart printer series and was regarded as one of the best ink jet printers for picture printing.
This printer has not disappointed me at all. Following is the list great features it has and some minor complaints:
1) This printer accepts the conventional serial port but also has USB compatibility as well. This is a great feature which allows you to connect your digital camera via USB directly to the printer and bypass the PC altogether. This will let you print your photos from the easy to understand display messages on the printer. This is a great feature for someone who does not own a PC.
3) The printer has a very good PPM for color and exceptionally fast PPM for text documents.
4) The printer is small and compact and prints very quietly as well.
5) This printer also comes with an empty bay in the back for two-sided page printing. The device is an extra purchase (I think $50-$100) and allows you to print manuals etc.
6) The printer also comes with some great photo editing software where you can crop, make picture frames, calendars, holiday cards, etc. with your favorite photos.
7) The Windows 2000 driver stinks for the serial connection (unless it has been updated since this review). I upgraded my laptop to Windows XP and the driver for that was great. The Windows 2000 driver seemed to make the printer take forever to spool its documents from the PC. I was getting one picture per 15 minutes! So beware, Windows 2000 users. Although, I cannot speak for the USB driver for Windows 2000.
8) HP has also released the HP PhotoSmart digital camera series to compliment its printer series. Please read my review about the HP PhotoSmart 215 digital camera. What a disappointment that turned out to be.
Overall, this printer is absolutely fantastic! It prints high quality photos (they look like they came from a laser jet), great PPM for text and color, quiet, low price (I paid $199.00 USD), and USB connectivity. A great printer for a great price!
