2008: Year of the Update

The Bottom Line It's time to update and improve some old reviews.

This is just something I’ve been intending to do for a while, so why not start now that 2008 is here? I’ve got several reviews in mind that I want to add to the review or perhaps change something that I don’t think is quite right. Trouble is, these new reviews tend to get in the way… so to add some motivation to get the updates done, I’m going to link to them all here.
Mobiprof once said to me that there was too much writing and not enough editing on Epinions. Much as I hate to agree with him :-D, I think he does have a point - and Epinions themselves have been stressing volume of reviews more and more over the last year or two. Therefore I want to do my bit to buck the trend a little. This isn’t a write off - I’m just doing it because it’s something I want to do - but if you feel that you’d like to go back and improve some old reviews, please be my guest.
You may be wondering though what is the point, or at least what is the benefit of updating old reviews? I suppose the most obvious is personal satisfaction, knowing that your review is now better and, hopefully, better able to give anyone reading the review all the information they might require. However there are mo palpable benefits:
- if you update a review (and let people know about the update) you might get better ratings and thus more people see your review
- people who see the updates will know that you’re someone who cares about the quality of your reviews as well as the quantity
- web pages that are updated often get better search engine results
Anyway, I’ve decided to keep a record of those I update in 2008. I’m not going to update them just for the sake of I, but if there are any that I feel might need an extra bit or something changed, I’ll do what’s necessary. I want to update at least 24 reviews by the end of the year; 2 per month seems a logical enough goal.
Addendum
In order to clear up a few questions raised directly and indirectly in the comments section:
The reference to informing people about udated reviews was only in reference to the accepted practice of asking someone for a re-rate if you had a less than VH rating from them, and you've significantly updated the review. I will not be emailing anyone about the reviews I plan to update, but will link to them here. If anyone's interested, they know where to look.
The created and last updated dates for each review are shown clearly enough by Epinions anyway (albeit not everyone realises where!). I am not going to put in my update when it was first written and when the update was, but will put the update under a header "UPDATE (part of the Update 2008 Project)" with a link back to this page.
I'm not talking so much about going back and editing spelling and / or grammer, though I will certainly do that if I notice an error. Rather, I will be adding to the review in each instance. My first update, The Stepford Wives, for example - I've added some info about Mary Stuart Masterson making her film debut in the movie (something I hadn't realised when I wrote the review originally), and an opinion on my second viewing of that movie. My KOTOR 2 update will feature some info on completing the game (playing both light side and dark side characters), and some information on modding - and why the PC version may be superior to the consoles because of the capacity of downloading game modifications.
My Top Ten Movies of All Time was well overdue a revamp, so has seen large sections added, deleted, or modified.
