Hey Beth!
I too am doing it partly because I don't envisage having much time to write new reviews... I want to get in the Top Ten MPA for Games though and keep my hats in books and movies... if possible!
Hope the inspiration lasts!! :-D

A great idea... (Reply to this comment)
by befus
and one I hope will motivate me to update a very old review I've been meaning to go back to for ages. It's of a cookbook/homemaking resource that I loved when I first used it, and have now been using for many more years and value even more highly. I simply know the book much better now than I did a few years ago, and can offer better tips on how to make the most of it as a resource. I also think I can probably tighten the writing and format.
I've been trying to focus more on quality than quantity lately (partly out of necessity, as I haven't time to write as much) so your essay feels inspiring. Good for you for setting an admirable and realistic goal!

... thanks everyone for taking the time to comment!
I've added an addendum to what I originally wrote to clear up a few questions / issues that were raised here in the comments. If anyone does do some updating then all the best with it! :-D

Cap'n,
I tried doing something similar a couple of years ago, as I have reviews from back when I first started here that I now know I can do a better job on.
However, I only got around to tackling me very first review, which turned into more of a re-write than an update. After that, I suddenly got inspired to write a whole new review and somehow I just never got back to those old ones.
You've put the idea in my head that now could be a good time to do just that. As you say, this isn't a write/off, but I think you may have inspired people to "join" nonetheless.
Dean.

Hi (Reply to this comment)

I've been meaning to update some of my older movie reviews for a while but I haven't done it yet. I have done smaller updates to many reviews, like if I spotted a spelling error or something like that. I did make myself some notes on a few movies to update, so I'll try to get to them someday.

Perhaps a note of the original published date and a succinct reason for the update might add value to your 'log' here.
As long as you do not send out e-mails about updates to this essay most will be happy. Of course, if you want to e-mail me about old reviews that I have already read-n-rated I will be glad to revisit.
That all said in a positive voice of course. Not that we expect you to abuse your use of updating as a lesser user might.
Very nicely said.

I do the same ..... (Reply to this comment)
by KMINER
not all of them, not all the time, but as I think of something. Usually when a toy breaks, or etc, that I knew I wrote about on the site. And it's usually seasonal - like every summer while I am home on break I comb through and edit reviews ... but thanks for the reminder, maybe I can do a few a month rather than try and tackle many at once?
I know this summer I finally updated one of my very first reviews, a kids book, and it felt great (and I remembered to email everyone I could to re-read) :)
Good Luck! Kimm

I actually update fairly regularly (Reply to this comment)
by shopaholic_man
I often re read my old reviews, and whenever I notice a typo or grammatic error, i will go in and change it. I also update old reviews to link to new reviews on related subjects.
Finally, if things change, I add that. I also update restuarant reviews as I try different selections. I do think its an excellent idea, especially when most of our hits and IS come from our body of work not our latest reviews.
I think your idea is an excellent one.

My thought (Reply to this comment)
by pmills1210
It's a good idea to update reviews here and there, but I decided early in my time here to avoid as much topicality as I can. If someone were to read a movie review of mine from 2000, it would now be wholly out of place to say words like "I watched this last night." If I must, I will state a year in the piece for the sake of having some connection to the date I originally wrote something. Good luck with your updates, and thanks for sharing.
Sincerely, Pat
