A Thought Provoking Piece (Reply to this comment)

I happened upon your writing while researching a good knee brace, and very much enjoyed your comments regarding this incident, as well as your story about your knee injury. Your writing is a breath of fresh air. Thanks!

Diffusion of responsibility...I believe I wrote a Psychology paper on that in college.
When there's a group of people around witnessing an event it's natural to assume someone else will help. Everyone in the room was thinking the same thing as you. The reality is that it's unnatural to act the way your good samaritan co-worker did. Too bad the one that needed help acted out the way he did. The good samaritan will think twice next time someone needs help. Funny how that works isn't it?

I always wondered.... (Reply to this comment)

where that sense of guilt comes from when I fail to help others. Is it simply a residue of Christian conditioning? Or is it a natural response. Perhaps the Germans were the most honest of all when they created the word "Schadenfreude", not to mention my Dutch neighbors who invented the brutally honest proverb "Geen schoner vermeek dan leedvermeek" (loosely "there's nothing better than watching other people suffer").
Funny how mankind can go from one extreme to the other...
Entertaining story!
