The Bottom Line Brewhouse Brown is an interesting example of the style.
As I have said many times before, I prefer ale to lager and ports and stouts rank among my favorite beer products. I also love a good brown ale when Im in the mood for this type of taste and one brown ale I am sampling now for the very first time is Brewhouse Brown Ale, a malty brew from Real Ale Brewing Company. Basic Characteristics of This Beer: Brewhouse Brown Ale is a dark brown brew with tinges of redness and a body that allows only a small amount of light to pass through. The nose on this beer is one of chocolate, roasted malt, earthy hops, and candy. The head of foam is pretty good, with small, tightly packed bubbles forming a protective tan cover that lasts for a good amount of time. Brewhouse Brown Ale offers flavors common to this style, including roasted malt, a touch of chocolate, and hazelnut. There is a certain fruity/herbal character as well, leading to a finish that is dry and delicate. Brewhouse Brown Ale is a medium bodied brew made with four different malts and hops. It contains a moderate level of alcohol, weighing in at 5.4 percent alcohol, with a bitterness rating of 33 IBU. Food Compatibility: This brown ale would make a good choice of beverage to drink with steak, grilled chicken, and ribs. It isnt as sweet as other brown ale, and thus it doesnt match up as nicely with sweet foods; the exception being pecan or other nut pie. Final Thoughts: Brewhouse Brown Ale is a product of the Real Ale Brewing Company of Blanco, Texas. I am sampling a few Real Ale products for the first time this week and today I find myself reaching for some Brewhouse Brown Ale to relax a little after a long day at work. Many brown ale tend to be on the sweet side, but Brewhouse Brown Ale is actually more balanced, with a bittersweet taste that leaves the palate a little confused. I opened my bottle of Brewhouse Brown expecting a sweet- tasting ale. What I got was somewhat of a surprise, but a fairly pleasant one. The chocolate, roasted, and nutty taste dimensions were expected, but I didnt expect the herbal and earthy taste contributions from the hops. One trait that seems common with Real Ale beers (so far) is that they are a little bit under- carbonated. Brewhouse Brown Ale offers only a small amount of carbonation action. It doesnt taste flat, but it also lacks the bubbly creaminess I like in my brown ale. Another unusual quality of Brewhouse Brown Ale is that it leaves a slick coating inside your mouth as you drink, making it a little less clean than the average beer. But dont let these few negative comments convince you to avoid giving Brewhouse Brown Ale a try, because there are still several good qualities that make it a beer worth sampling. It is a good- tasting ale that offers a better level of balance then other brown ale. The overall taste remains on the malty side, but there is a nice balance with the herbal hops in the finish. Overall, Real Ale Brewhouse Brown Ale is a beer worth trying if you get the chance. It isnt a classic brew, but it is certainly deserving of 3.5 out of 5 stars and a recommendation. The medium body and complex taste make this a brown ale to savor and enjoy. |
