The Bottom Line WHO WILL WIN?!

Holy cow! It’s my 600th REVIEW! Feel the magic kids! And I really, really didn’t mean for this to get posted around the time of the Academy Awards, so I find it pretty hilarious that it worked out this way. Score one for me eh? I’ve had this list waiting to be posted for quite some time, and finally it has! Whoo hoo!

So, the final Top 10 list in Nicole’s Top 10 Top 10 Lists (catch all that?). As usual, no previous movies could be entered into this list, but that’s okay considering these all came into the exact spot I wanted them in. While this list is placed in “Best Movies Ever” that’s not necessarily true. Similar to the Oscars, these movies have won a place in this list for something special, and in many cases, very specific. There is no best picture, just fyi, so don’t bother looking for one. Haha. So which movies made the cut and what did they win? Keep reading to find out...

1. Van Helsing – for the Best Damn Werewolves Ever
That’s right kids, the best werewolves EVER. I don’t care what anyone else says. From the moment I envisioned what a werewolf looked like, these guys are exactly what popped up in my mind. I got really excited in the theater when I saw them, and no werewolf has ever come close to looking that awesome, and I haven’t seen any since. Finally, a true fusion of wolf and man that doesn’t look like a fuzzy dude, and weird ape-man, or a guy with a big, stupid werewolf prosthetic head. Cue the confetti.

2. Star Wars – for Old School Special Effects
That means episodes IV, V, and VI, and before those extra scenes added in with the CGI crap. I can’t stand that extra stuff. I love the old school special effects because ironically, they look more realistic than computer graphics. Better details, more ruggedness, and more fun. Sure, there may be a goofy looking alien here and there, but who didn’t forget that there was actually a guy in the Chewbacca suit? As opposed to Jar Jar Binks, the character you’d like to wipe out with a computer virus (take that you stupid CGI character!). I can tell something is CGI the second I see it, which can be annoying because I want stuff to look real. I’m not completely savvy on how all the oldschool stuff went down, and I like it that way. The second these movies came out on DVD with the option of watching the un-tampered with versions, I snatched them up.

3. Silent Hill – for being the Only Scary Movie I Wasn’t Scared of in the Least
Most scary movies I either avoid or watch during the day and preferably with other people. It seems like once a year a scary movie will come out that I want to see (for some reason). Most of the time I know I’ll be a little freaked out by it and hope my imagination doesn’t go psycho on me when darkness falls (because it does and I can’t often stop it. It sucks). However, when Silent Hill trailers began popping up, I got really excited and wanted to see the movie – bad. I knew I wasn’t going to be afraid of it at all. Why? The simple fact that I knew it was based on the video game. Now why that should matter is beyond me, but instead of going into the movie ready to be freaked out, I went in ready to see some cool video game type monsters and some freaky crap. I went. I saw. I enjoyed. I was not afraid. And it was an awesome movie. It’s now on my DVD wishlist.

4. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King – for being Absolutely Amazing and Giving Fantasy Back Its Place in Hollywood
2003 Best Picture Award. THAT’S RIGHT! Well deserved, I might add. This was a fantastic movie with amazing scope (not that the first two didn’t either, but the second movie was out of the running for this because of the Wargs, and the first, well, it didn’t win best picture though it should have). Finally a movie that showed Hollywood that Best Picture didn’t have to be won by depressing, character-driven movies that half the population hasn’t even heard of. Likewise, just as it did in the literary world, Lord of the Rings gave a place back to fantasy in the film industry. Wow, the public enjoys this stuff? YES, WE DO. Idiots. Thanks to this movie (and the other two), more and more fantasy has been coming out of the woodwork. Of course, I don’t have concrete facts, but it just looks a lot like that to me.

5. Stargate – for Inspiring an Awesome and Successful Sci-Fi TV series
No, Stargate was not a great movie. Heck, it wasn’t really even a good movie. What is good is the television series Stargate SG-1 and even Stargate Atlantis has it’s cool moments. However, without the original movie, none of these would have come into existence. Awww, how sad would that be? No Richard Dean Anderson, no massive wars over Antarctica, no crazy planets with blue crystals and yellow sand. Thankfully, a so-so movie turned out to be an inspiration to a couple of guys that have created a show that’s lasted for 10 years (maybe longer if you count the couple of videos they’re coming out with soon...)

6. Gettysburg – the Best Made for TV Movie Ever
On the subject of movies and TV, most movies that are made for TV suck, end of story. However, when TNT aired a movie based on Michael Shaara’s book The Killer Angels with some high-end names and a whole truckload of volunteer Civil War re-enactors, watchers everywhere found themselves entranced. It was a fantastic movie with skill, realism, and the kind of acting and musical score that could bring a tear to your eye. In a weird twist, its theatrical movie counterpart Gods and Generals was nowhere half as awesome as this movie was.

7. Ghostbusters – 3 Words: StayPuft Marshmallow Man
Every time I watch this movie I laugh and just cannot believe the amount of crazy creativity that went into this script. It’s so unique, it’s ridiculous. Who thinks of a giant marshmallow man taking out New York City? I mean, honestly, who does that? Well, now we know. More oldschool stuff that pretty much rules the universe. Actually, this movie could easily fit into the category of “Best Movies Ever” because it really is a film that people still quote and dance to the theme song (though usually at Halloween – or if you’re at a skating rink for some reason). If you haven’t seen this movie, you need to. Otherwise I may subject you to electric shocks. ;)

8. Jurassic Park – Dinosaurs. Duh.
Sure, though most of these dinosaurs are comtpuer generated, there are those few times when what do we get? Robots! And kudos to those robots because they are good – and I mean good. Only if you look closely enough are you able to see the slightly jerky movements that most robots make (or robotic movements, if you prefer – like Fawks in Harry Potter). For being so big, that’s impressive. I really do enjoy the CGI in this movie because it feels like it actually has some substance instead of being totally smooth and flawless. How many people decided velociraptors were their favorite dinosaur after this movie? And when’s the last time we’ve gotten to see dinos eating people on a large scale and not in horror-movie fashion (*coughCarnosaurcough*). Rock on dinos, rock on.

9. Pirates of the Caribbean – for being The Best Thing to Happen to Pirates Since Errol Flynn
How long had it been since any of us, young and old alike, had watched a decent pirate movie? 1958 with Yul Brenner in The Buccaneers? 1985 with The Goonies? Haha. Suddenly here it was, a sword-swinging adventure on the high seas with double-crosses, romance, daring, and some drunkenness. Love the rum. A colorful cast and a great story, what’s not to love? Even though in reality pirates are a lot different and the pirating life is not awesome, it’s fun to dream of this sort. You even loved the bad guys, come on! Sure, the movies may have gotten a little more ridiculous as they went on, but you know you watched all three of them. Don’t lie.

10. Conan the Barbarian – for being My First Soundtrack Love
When it comes to soundtracks and starting me on the road toward soundtrack junkiedom, this movie wins. The Conan the Barbarian soundtrack is extremely powerful, and it still bums me out knowing Basil Poledouris is gone and I won’t get anything like this ever again. Close, perhaps, but not the same. While I was still young and didn’t rush out to buy the soundtrack then (I probably didn’t even realize you could buy movie music separately), and though I can’t say this spurred me on to pay closer attention to the music of other movies (it was more a gradual realization), this is the first time I noticed music to be a fantastic addition to a movie, thoroughly enjoying pieces like “Theology/Civilization” and “Kitchen/The Orgy.” Thanks Basil, love you forever.

**That small award that gets presented during the commercials** Vacancy - for best trailer I've ever seen
I still haven't seen the movie, and I don't know what it is about this trailer, but the first time I saw it, I loved it. The music was perfect and stranger still, everyone I knew that had seen the trailer agreed - it was awesome. None of us could put our finger on it, the best we could come up with was that it seemed like a great mini movie in itself. Whatever its secret, it's fantastic.

There you have it! I hope you have all enjoyed the Top 10 lists I’ve put together over the year (or whenever I started this insanity – and that’s if you’ve actually been following along, haha) and I’m glad to have been with Epinions for 600 reviews and very nearly 5 years. What a trip it’s been, from college to the “real world,” from Illinois to Pennsylvania, from 1 review to 600, may you all keep rockin’ on and enjoy the weather while it lasts! Every day is precious, every minute you’re alive a miracle. Let go of the small annoying things and hang on to the big, loving ones. Don’t stress, eat chocolate, and let’s keep reviewing together.

HIGH FIVE GUYS!
