| vidgamer's Full Review: Epson Stylus Photo 785EPX Ink-jet Printer |
I just replaced an older Epson (720dpi) that I've had for a few years, and this one works much better. It goes without saying that the print quality is far superior, but it's faster, and handles paper better. I was happy when I upgraded to that older printer at the time, but I always had trouble with envelopes; now, envelope printing is almost perfect.
It may sound like exaggerating, but the 785EPX is capable of printouts that are as good as photos. I still prefer to send off (mail order) for printed photos, partially because it is less hassle, and partially because I feel that traditional photo printing may hold up better, as I've easily scratched a couple of my inkjet prints.
A nice touch is a visual walk-through in the utilities software to help you change the ink cartridge.
One negative is that I'm not happy with the output if I print directly from a compact flash card (using the included PC card adaptor in the front slot). The best quality I could get appeared to be only 720 dpi, but perhaps I am missing something. I'm not sure how much I would use that option anyway, since I download all of my pics to my computer. However, it seems like it would be a nice "quick" option, particularly if the computer is tied up. I have used the card slot to transfer photos to the computer, so it is useful for that, at least.
The below is an update since my original posting:
I have noticed lately that the ink heads seem to get clogged more frequently if the printer is left on continually. The manual hints at this (the way it is worded is something more like [paraphrased], "If head-cleaning doesn't work, turn off the printer overnight and try later"), but that isn't exactly saying the same thing. Cleaning the heads isn't too difficult, but it's an annoyance that you'd rather not to have to deal with any more than necessary (particularly if you do not notice that the heads need cleaning until after you've tried to print something).
