Purchased a cafe Express 8 internal HUB bike from Bikes Direct in July 2010. Came promptly. right away noticed some components were nice but many (seat, seat post, cranks, pedals were of WalMart quality) The website said it was $1000 retail for $449. I'd say its worth about $449 ... maybe... just becasue the frame and wheels look ok and hub is there and worth something. pedal did not go on left crank well, wound up stripping threads(I have installed hundred of pedals in my life) . Bike now in shop for 1. retooled (or new) crank and replacement pedals. Bike came semi assembled but wheels NOT trued at all . brakes terribly adjusted so need a shop to do all that as well. Customer service ?? The worst part of - just 1- 3 day turnaround on email! All they told me is what I "broke' is not covered... I'd say the bike is a 2 on 1 to 5 scale and the service is a 1. Fundamentally its an OK bike (I am hoping) but i think most of the junk parts will have to be upgraded before too long, so a $459 bike which is already $600 may end up $7-800 before its over and done. You can get a nice Trek or Cannondale hybrid for that. PLUS have a warranty and most bikes give tuneups for life now!
Can't return as now its all f--d up. Needs new /repaired crank, pedals, restocking fee, repairs, and shipping! what a bad investment. Not sure it was right when i git it even.
Go to a local bike store or even craigslist to save a few bucks for a 1-2 year old bike shop bike.
I guess if you are a true wrench turner and you know exactly what you are getting maybe it would be worth it. For me it did not work out. My advise would be to avoid it, i was really looking forward to saying 'told you so look at my great bike!" not I am saying what a low class -crap outfit.
