Hiya Regina!
I know I'm spoiled rotten, matie. :o) It was more luck than anything, I think. Hopefully I'm doing these performances justice. Mt. Smorg is very happy to not be erupting at the moment... ;o)
Thanks a bunch for stopping by!

It was a good evening at Civic Theater indeed, T. :o) Beautiful music and beautiful staging. I bet the last 2 shows will be better yet. Wish there are more clips of that Carter Scott to be found.
Oh, but the opera don't refund tickets fee, Dusty. ;o) That's the big reason why we fans are so fearful of cancellation by favorite singers during the flu-infested winter months... I was so relief that Kasarova showed up to sing Zayda in New York 2 yrs ago after my hellish plane ride across the continent (and back again right afterward... it took a whole week before I was able to keep food down again after that trip). But that's the risk we all know when we pay for our ticket... And who knows, even with cancellations, sometimes a great star is born that way (like Astrid Varnay or Kasarova or Genaux).
Hope y'all are having a great weekend!

If there isn't a satisfactory ending to the story (too many loose ends), it's nice to know they'd refund my money. Choke, choke. :)\

Hiya Dusty,
O, nobody knows what happens to those two afterward, matie. :o) The curtain falls right after Mamma Lucia hears of her son's death, and that's it.
One of the things that distinguish verismo opera from other Italian ones is the 'tragic' ending indeed. Some earlier composers (like Rossini in Tancredi) tried to have a tragic ending in their opera serie, but the audience then would demand a happy ending alternative... they wanted to escape from everyday life rather than being reminded of it. For a brief period, the trend went backward, but it didn't last long at all. I think Pagliacci was loosely based on a real story of a commedia dell'arte clown who went mad on stage.. and Leoncavallo's dad was the judge who presided on the case.
Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Hope the week has started well your way!

You forgot (Reply to this comment)
by ddustyrose, in Music
to tell those of us not familiar with the story what happened to Lola and her husband Alfio? Also, what became of Santuzza and her child? Was there a happy ending of any kind?
Good job on getting a free tix! :)

Thanks a bunch! :o) I'm really grateful for the free tickets indeed. And the folks there are so friendly and professional and are really good about letting me call it as I see/hear it. I'm really happy that they really scored a home-run with this cast in Cav/Pag! It's easy to give details when the performance is memorable! :o)
Hey, welcome to Epinions, Cynhilde! Thanks a bunch for your very kind comment, too. Coming from a singer, that means a lot to me. :o)
Ms. Scott sure blew me away as Santuzza. I'm really happy that I heard her for the first time in a live show. I think you're right that she is going to have a major career indeed. That kind of stage presence is hard to find and she really knows how to use her voice, too. There was a point in the performance where the orchestra and chorus were getting really loud toward the end of a crescendo and I wondered if she was going to have enough voice to handle them after all the singing she had been doing. But she knew how to save the breath for when it really counts and blasted her climatic notes out right on the money. A very intelligent singer, she is.
Anyhow! Thanks very much again! Hope you'll write opera reviews here sometimes. Epinions can use more reviewers in the classical music fachs. It's quite a cool site with lots of good writers.
Hope everyone is in for a great week!
Cheers,
Smorgy :o)

Balanced, fair review (Reply to this comment)
by cynhilde
I was delighted to read your very balanced, fair review. The short, to-the-point outline of the story was I'm sure interesting to those who don't know CAV/PAG. It was astute of you to realize that certain artists will develop in a role as they perform it more often. That's not ALWAYS the case, but here I think you noted that possibility accurately. I've met the absolutely gorgeous Ms. Carter Scott a few times, and find her just as scintillating offstage as on! She is at the break-through point in what should be a very important career.
