There is nothing grander than going to see a Verdi grand opera. Catch Indra Thomas and Mariana Pentcheva at the opera this month!

The premier night of Aida was a good show indeed, Jennifer. I was surprised there wasn't any live animal on the stage ;o), but then that's probably for the better, considering the multitude of horror stage stories about them.

And you've found the Cosmic Voices of Bulgaria! Le Mystè:re des Voix Bulgares is a fantastic intro to Bulgarian folk music indeed. Amazing how they make all those weird dissonance work, ay? The same female choir also sings with Vesselina Kasarova in her solo CD called Bulgarian Soul, another fantastic CD that won the ECHO Award in 2003. They make me want to go visit that Balkan country! I hope you'll get to see the opera in Denver sometimes, too. :o)

Heehee, thanks a bunch for the link to the HGO's version of Aida, Regina! One of these days I'll have to go and catch a show there. I was just watching a DVD of Adamo's Little Women from the HGO last night! Quite a cool show! :o)

Thanks a bunch for stopping by, maties. Hope April is being nice your way!

Cheerio,
Smorgy :o)

Great write-up, and of course, I'm so jealous that you scored yet another orchestra level seat!

Yeah, Aida on stage blew me away, and of course, the Houston Grand Opera put on an amazing show.

BTW, portions of the HGO Aida live performance are now found on NPR.

Well, done, Smorgy!

Best wishes,

Mysterious Bulgaria, (Reply to this comment)

Dear Smorg,

Aida sounds like a winner ~ the Egyptian angle adds a lot of exotic flair!

You mentioned:
"I must confess that I tend to find voices from Bulgaria positively irresistible..."

I agree! Somewhere in an old collection, I have cassette tape called "Le Mystere des Voix Bulgares" with a group of ladies singing traditional songs in Bulgarian. These ladies chant in such a haunting, mysterious tone, but I used to love listening to them ~ it was amazing!

Great review, I hope to see the opera in Denver some day :)

Privet Arashi!
Ack! Thanks a bunch, matie. I'm always mixing their names up. :o)

It was a great show indeed! I'm grateful it was a traditional staging, too (though that is pretty much the norm here in America)... A friend sent me this link (http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=LCFNcEFZn38) of a staging of Verdi's Nabucco... Honestly, that Hans Neufeld has no business staging opera!!! Can you imagine doing what he does to this serious an operatic plot? Ewwwwwwww!

Hope you're having a splendid Sunday!

Ciao,
Smorgy :o)

...the Ethiopian, whose Princess Amneris...

Eh, Aida, you mean? Anyway, I'm a little envious now, as I've never seen 'Aida' on stage, much less in traditional setting. Lucky you to have been there and thanks for sharing your experience with us! ;)
