This is a six month follow up. I have left my original review intact following this addendum.
What a disappointment! I can understand service suffering a little bit with popularity, but this is ridiculous. The wait time for any new release, not even a blockbuster is intolerable. I have been waiting a month for Shallow Hal, with no delivery date in sight. There are other examples too numerous to mention.
I have an excellent quality DVD player and yet many of the discs that come from Netflix now are not playable. I am able to see maybe 3 movies a month now by the time all the hassle is done. In my opinion they have gone from surprisingly great to horrendous rip off. I have contacted customer service, and plan to give them a shot at redemption, but I expect to be cancelling my service soon. I no longer recommend Netflix to anyone. If they get their act together fast, I will update this again, however my hopes are dim.
Between the wait list and damaged discs (now running about 50%), it is far more economical, and enjoyable to get a movie package, say 12 showtime channels, for what I was paying for Netflix. Now for my original review. I think you'll see how bad they have gotten.
As a die hard movie buff of nearly every genre of film, Netflix is a sheer delight. Fastest possible response coupled with the absolute best customer service on the planet.
Netflix gives you more than you ask for. Instead of trying to find ways minimizing their costs, they simply provide you with everything you could possibly ask for in this type of service. Imagine that, succeeding in business by giving the customer exactly what they want instead of trying to cheat you out of your money. I hope this concept spreads to the ISP industry! It is a tremendous savings in time and money, and I simply love it.
So, here is Netflix in a nutshell. Although there are three different levels in which to participate, go for the 20 dollar package. You won't be sorry. If you want to cut back later you can. In fact, unlike cable, you can change at will with no service charge or other problem.
You go online and select all the movies you would like to see and place them in a shipping queue. Netflix immediately ships out you first selections (4 if you get the 20 dollar package) These movies arrive in a nifty jacket that serves a a pre-paid, yes I said pre-paid, return mailer. Every time they get a movie back from you, your next selection is shipped out. Change your queue list at will, they don't care.
You get an e-mail telling you which movie they received back and then tell you that your next selection (by title no less)is on the way. They also tell you when to expect it! Are you ready for this? The movies almost always arrive early!
We always have a couple of fresh titles on hand. We also get a chance to rate each movie viewed. Based on our rating, a short list of possible titles is suggested for future viewing. Take them or leave them, but I've found a couple of movies that I wouldn't have normally watched and had a great experience.
We have friends who have had the service for a while and they report that all the possible bugs you can think of are handled quickly. Not one person I have talked to has had a negative experience with this service.
I was able to eliminate most of the premium movie channels from my cable package and be a couple of bucks ahead after the 20 monthly fee for the Netflix service.
If you enjoy movies and are tired of the movie rental hassle this is top notch value and service. What are you waiting for? Type netflix into your search engine and get going!!
