I should pay better attention. (Reply to this comment)

Dear Kristina,
I am almost two weeks behind on reading reviews, and I had no idea that Tomiko, Crystal, Garrett, and Andy had all left :( They were incredibly dedicated and skilled people. And they were so good-looking, too. I'm glad you're writing for a good cause.
Love,
David

It's a good thing you're doing, but I can write as much as I have been. I could review lots of kids' books and go stark raving mad, but don't think so! I keep inspired to write reviews by reviewing things I feel are important and fascinating, but this search engine etc is really a pain.

You are so on my WOT... (Reply to this comment)
by BeastieGirl
because you are the exact kind of person that I want to associate myself with- someone who loved/loves the site and has seen a few ups and downs, writes to write for personal satisfaction as well as community satisfaction, possibly enjoys the $, as little as it may be at times... but I love that you are going to donate your earnings and I may have to join in on this "write for charity"- a Very Helpful review can come in many different forms. I love the following you have and what you have brought to the site.... good luck, I can't wait to see how many you put out this month- I'll be watching- and rating!!

I just came back to the site and hardly recognize it (Reply to this comment)
by laura10801
Yes it looks the same, but it doesn't feel the same at all.
I came back to write, then got to thinking the 10 for 10 would be a fun challenge to me.
I get no sense of community from Epinions anymore. Some of the people I know and like are still around, others aren't, but either way there is a dryness to the atmosphere that is not familiar to me and doesn't inspire me much.
I'm glad to see you here. I've always enjoyed your writing and I look forward to seeing more of it.
Laura.

remove you from my WOT.
And I'm telling you.....you're not going.
Glad to see you still here. I myself do not contribute near as much. But as long as you're around, Epinions is worthwhile.
As far as the status of Epinions itself goes, I said what I felt needed to be said already.

in all of your efforts outside Epinions. You're one of those people I will make time to read. I will try to do the 10-for-10 promotion, though I don't always succeed. I think this promotion has, in one way, backfired. It makes writes focus on the writing, and less on the other apsects of being here. Maybe they should do something that makes contributors focus on all of the things they want from their top writers, not just one thing. Maybe they should simply reward quality reviews without so much regard to quantity or quota. Thanks for sharing!
Sincerely, Pat

Best wishes on your Asperger's Syndrome works.
But you have put your finger on the incredible weakness of the current Epinions business model. Whether one writes to describe "a product," or for the sheer practice, or for the money (!! simple-mindedness has long reigned is this category), the important object of the operation is the . . . finished review.
Given the competition which has risen in the last decade to challenge Epinions' place in the market, why would larger numbers of readers come to this site, with its search engine, product list, accounting problems, etc, which have never managed to get fixed, when one can get the kind of reviews now being encouraged off the back of the proverbial cereal box.
Do hordes of people really need 300 word, sloppily written, intimately detailed pieces on my relationship with a Snickers Bar? Hollywood, in its most arrogant heyday, would not have had such a dismissive view of the customers' intelligence.
What used appear to be the dyspeptic complaints of a few (a number of them on this page) now appears to be an incipient revolt similar to the collapse of East Germany!
All the best.

I was always (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray
dubious that hits were being counted correctly.
I was dismayed by the dramatic drop of hits to my reviews this year and at first thought it was just me. Now there is even admission from on high that hits have not been counting properly. In a way it is reassuring for those of us who write to be read (all of us?) that we're not being read less.
10-4-10 is considerably more transparent than IS.
I AM suspicious of coincidences, but I have been told that Garrett gave considerable notice, so that he and Andy did not just decide to jump ship the same week. (Personally, I want Alexis back!)

I have noticed the same issues you have seen and agree with you. Kind of ironic since the folks in charge want to make Epinions the premier shopping site. Until they fix these things--it won't be no matter how much they pay for numbers of reviews.

Epinions Has Changed... (Reply to this comment)
by thevoid99
I'm about to approach my eighth year as well and things have changed. It's good to hear that you're still going to be around. I can't think of this site without you. I admit, I have my own issues with the site regarding its search engines and topics that haven't posted. Plus, product reviews that are never going to be posted which is why I put them in my blog (the new NIN album for example which doesn't come out on CD in July).
I admit, I have mixed feelings for the 10 for 10 thing. Though I did just write 20 reviews last month, partly I admit was for financial reasons, but mostly creative reasons given the rut I went through for the past few months. I hope you do 30-40 reviews for June. We need ya here, I need ya. You're one of the best and I need someone here to read my upcoming reviews of Gilmore Girls seasons.

I have already too briefly shared a thought or two with you about 'all this'.
you said...
"All money earned this month (and what currently exists in my account) will be donated to my local Easter Seals Crossroads organization."
You know, it was not so long ago when the site was able to find it in itself to make a similar commitment to charity; with donations based on the writers here contributing their efforts to support and fund those donations.
Sadly, I am not sure the 'current Epinions' has it in them to act in the same manner. To be honest, I am not sure the weakened community here has the heart to support it as they once once would have ...as they once did.
The loss of that bigger vision, of a willingness to act beyond ourselves as a community, as partners, wounds me deeper than any search problem, deeper than any /review problem, deeper than any mechanical problem of Epinions.
Very nicely said.

Another Old Timer Speaks (Reply to this comment)
by BARNZ
I found your piece to be disturbing on several levels. Mostly, because I could never bring myself to care that much about a site or the staff of a site. While yes it is disturbing for me I guess I understand as well and will say Bully for you and Godspeed on your quest to secure your 10 for 10 for those who need it.
I for one will do it, because, well I deserve it. Even when I wasn't writing reviews I was using the site and now that I'm writing reviews again I'm enjoying having an additional reason to see, to do and to be.

Epinions (Reply to this comment)
by skbreese
Hi Kristina, I agree that the 10 for 10 write-offs have been both bad and good for the website. It has resulted in a lot of superficial, hastily written reviews, but also has given those of us that have toiled away for years for pennies, a motivation to write more. Anyway, I hope you keep writing, because, I too, value the relationships and community features of epinions. Take care. Sheila

Your thought of writing for a charity this month is quite admirable, and I wish you luck. Go for 100! I will be looking for them to rate them. Maybe you can get a nice chunk of IS too to add to your donation! :)
Best of luck...
