The Bottom Line Tell No One about the Blood Diamond To Return with the Dreamgirls. Anyway, these Little Children would not understand like little Isabella & Bobby in Babel.

Fifteen Finest Films of Two Thousand and Six.

A rare year where two comedies top the list, 2006 was fun and showcased some fantastic films from all around the world, or all in one film like the daring Babel.

Must See Pictures

15. Leben der Anderen, Das (aka The Lives of Others)
14. Arcanum
13. 13 game sayawng (aka 13 Beloved)
12. The Pursuit of Happyness
11. Yi sa bui lai (aka Isabella)

Top 10 Movies of 2006

10. Volver (aka To Return)
Director: Pedro Almodóvar
Writer: Pedro Almodóvar

This international success is moving and utilizes the film medium very well. The story is enchanting while suspense and disbelief are intelligently constructed. Almodóvar outdoes himself and shows his mastery of movie-making helping Penélope Cruz give the performance of her life.

9. Babel
Director: Alejandro González Iñárritu
Writer: Guillermo Arriaga

Iñárritu ignites the screen with real drama and interweaves stories like a master seamster breaking language and country barriers, uncovering the human soul and pointing at our constant misunderstanding. Beyond the directing and editing, everything from the screenplay to the score, cinematography and acting soar to new cinematic heights. A film to look up to.

8. Blood Diamond
Director: Edward Zwick
Writers: Charles Leavitt

Why do we want diamonds and at what cost? DiCaprio delivers once again, augmented by a fine performance by Hounsou as the troubled father desperately wanting to reunite with his son. The story is good and makes us feel and think. Possibly, you won’t be able to look at a jewelry store the same way anymore.

7. Remake
Director: Roger Gual
Writers: Roger Gual & Javier Calvo

This Spanish film explores youth, life, libertinism, growing up and getting old in a beautiful country setting. The screenplay is solid and full of philosophical insight and great character development. The directing and strong acting make you feel right there with the group of long time friends that get to escape their daily reality to bond in a collective memory-filled cottage and reflect about a lot of things and hopefully have a good time as well.

6. Ne le dis à personne (aka Tell No One)
Director: Guillaume Canet
Writer: Guillaume Canet

This French fare is an intense thriller and smart, suspensfull ride. Canet brings us in the intrigue and peels the layers of the onion in front of our eyes. Where will this all lead? Follow this convoluted story with a great lead performance by François Cluzet as the distraught doctor.

5. Dreamgirls
Director: Bill Condon
Writer: Bill Condon

This movie is a mesmerizing musical with great signing and songs, mixed with innovative directing and sharp editing. Condon is able to get some great acting from signers Hudson and Knowles as well as veterans Murphy, Glover and Foxx. Live the dream and be caught in the backstage drama.

4. Bobby
Director: Emilio Estevez
Writer: Emilio Estevez

Different stories in a hotel coexist until something brings them together. A slick social commentary with lasting effect. Great ensemble acting and well-paced editing by old hand Richard Chew.

3. Little Children
Director: Todd Field
Writers: Todd Field & Tom Perrotta

Probably the best exploration of modern suburbia. Rich characterization with likeable and less likeable individuals some times switching roles. A refined look at relationships and expectations, parenthood and paranoia.

2. Little Miss Sunshine
Directors: Jonathan Dayton & Valerie Faris
Writer: Michael Arndt

Laugh and be swept away by this Little Miss Sunshine and her dysfunctional family. Great dialog and acting makes this a sure hit on anybody’s list. Quirky and quintesentially original. To be easily enjoyed again and again.

1. Lage Raho Munna Bhai (aka Munnabhai Meets Mahatma Gandhi)

Director: Rajkumar Hirani
Writers: Abhijit Joshi, Rajkumar Hirani & Vidhu Vinod Chopra

Beautiful & brilliant, this film elevates comedy to bring a worthwhile message in a straightforward and effective way. The laughs are there but shared with the constant smile you wear on your face as the deeper appreciation of the film fills you with sheer joy. The growths of the characters become our growth. We can always learn to become better persons.
