how do you find the time to listen to so much!? i envy you!
nice back-out on that james joyce comment. i almost puked on myself. lol. lil' wayne is barely literate, so i must agree, i don't think james is sharing a blunt with him anytime soon.
love that you put why? at the top. i find it such an oddly intriguing album, but hell, couldn't you say that about any anticon-related release. still, they are rarely as catchy and directly -- absurdly -- quotable. "if you grew up with white boys who only look at black and puerto rican porno, because they want something that their dad don't got, then you know where your at", shouldn't be so easily recalled. :o)
have you ever, before, sang the words "i saw two men f--ck in the back corner of a basketball court..." so excitedly? or perhaps it's just me.
lates.
peace & love,
Eric

"And if you don't like it, you can shove it.
But you don't like it, you love it."
I had a great turning point with this album. I first couldn't stand any lyric here, but now, with the catchy melodies, I find every lyric to be amazing in that extrodinarily, yet intentionally lame sort of way.
My personal favorite being: Everybody get dangerous with the 'Booyah' call and response.

On a side note, it's also a lot more interesting to come up with a list at this point in the year, when the critics collective top ten hasn't already been established. Last year I didn't even want to include LCD or the National on my list because they'd been so hyped up and overused on every year end list.

Not sure why this is quite so baffling. The list is indeed wildly arbitrary. I'm not saying these are the albums that'll be my favorites come year end or stand the test of time as masterpieces. Just saying that at this point in the year this is the very rough order of my favorite new stuff I've heard. It's an exercise for myself, essentially, because who doesn't like making lists?

I have to respectfully disagree with the claim that Tha Carter III is a cohesive album at all. Wayne has the genre-hopping down to a science, sure, but he caters to so many styles the album doesn't feel like more than a fairly haphazard collection of songs to me. I think they're often great songs... but it's not like they flow into one another or sound better in the context of the album.
I think you and I are simply going to disagree on Lupe. I listened to that album again today and loved it more than I did when I wrote this piece. I admit his concepts are bloated and he really could use an editor. But when he's on man... I'd take the opening rush of Go-Go Gadget Flow over anything on Tha Carter.
And I completely agree with your point on Kanye. He is a better producer. I don't care either that he's lost a lot of his gooofy, lovable persona. I'd rather he just crafted great songs, and on Graduation I rarely felt that was the case.
Thanks for the comment.

This list comes off as a bit strange to me. That's really because most publications don't list more than 10 at the end of the year, and most that do only do so because it's a combination of many people's top 10s. So much of this list feels a bit arbitrary and obligatory, especially coming only midway through the year -- making top 10 lists is always difficult ("Do I really like #8 more than #9?"), so this one is particularly odd.
Baffling, man. Baffling.

but dude...The Cool above C3? aaaah...and on a more relevant Chicago rap note i know some people want the College Dropout more blatantly self-deprecating and goofy Kanye back, but his production for himself keeps improving, and i really think Graduation is lighter than a lot of people think.
Lupe, it's not like i hate the guy, although based on how he handled the criticism of his Tribe Called Quest tribute performance on VH1 last year i think he's kinda clueless sometimes. but i think he needs to condense his flow more (doesn't mean dumbing it down, both Jay-Z and Wayne have become more to-the-point and better stylistically,) focus his concepts more and get better producers. actually i can't even pick out one song there i really like on the level of "I Gotcha" from his debut, though i guess "The Coolest," "Hip Hop Saved My Life" and "Hi-Definition" are better than the rest.
C3 is unfocused compared to Graduation and American Gangster but i think it's more cohesive than you give it credit for. i like playing certain songs on Wayne's mixtapes but this is the first time he's really got his weirdness down to a science, in an album you can listen to front to back even if there's no set sonic theme.
anyway, keep writing man
