Thanks for the report that Palin "used her line-item veto to slash funding for a state program benefiting teen mothers in need of a place to live," as well as opposing realistic sex education.
As Talyseon, Bristol is not going to have to try to raise the baby on a minimum-wage job. We can wonder what kind of mother puts her unmarried 5-month pregnant daughter into the glare of national publicity and -- whether she is raising her daughter's Down's syndrome child a few months ago or produced Trig herself -- takes on a campaign that will keep her on the road for the next three months?

Aside from dramatic evidence of the kind (anedcotal) that most people prefer that abstinence-only indoctrination does not work, the focus on Palin has been eclipsing celebration of McCain in what was supposed to be his week. Well, except for raising more questions about his judgment anyway!

One could cry... (Reply to this comment)

I was watching on CNN as various high-ranking republicans, of course, defended the selection of Sarah Palin and, the more I read about it, the more I cannot believe this happened. It looks more like a black humor Hollywood movie than reality.
Of course, I never thought Bush would be elected (let alone twice). Please tell me this absurd choice will backfire on the Republicans and we won't have the most powerful country run by a hockey mom with family "values"!
Just when I thought America could not become more pathetic than it already is...

Hypocrite to the Nth Degree (Reply to this comment)
by jsommersby
Let's not forget that Palin supported the Bridge to Nowhere until she found out that additional federal funding for it wasn't going to come -- this is akin to Bush lying during the '00 campaign that he supported a patient's bill of rights in Texas when in fact he vetoed that measure. And with I-was-for-the-bridge-before-I-was-against-it Palin leaving out her initial support, she's lying just like Bush. (In their twisted view, they think they can sin all they want to just because they're anti-abortion, like it's going to be some kind of Get Out of Jail Free card when their time comes a callin' to the big man upstairs.
Oh, and I'm proud to stoke the fire of your piece with a very juicy article furthering the fact of Palin being a hypocrite:

You couldn't make this stuff up if you tried.

I agree.... (Reply to this comment)

with all of the previous comments.
This entire fiasco on the part of the Republican party is so typical of the hypocrisy of the GOP , especially on the "family values" issues.
They are, of course, thrilled that this is taking attention away from the issues that matter most to the American people. The last eight years of Republican leadership has destroyed our economy, our standing in the world, our military, and has not made us any safer in this post-September 11th world, yet here is everyone talking about what a terrific woman this nobody from Alaska is. You have to give them credit . Hopefully the American people won't fall for the Republican gamesmanship again.
But don't underestimate the utter ignorance of a significant percentage of the American populace.
When I was watching Fred Thompson's speech last night (yes, I forced myself to watch much of last night's events), its militaristic tone, as well as the roar of the crowd, scared the hell out of me. It had the feel of a 1930's Berlin rally.
God help us all if their tactics work.

You are right, in many ways, skbreese, but with one important exception...Baby Palin and her baby will not be doomed to the lifestyle of a teenage mother; she will make out a list of what she wants from the store, not go shopping to see how much she can get with the sixty dollars she has. I doubt she will clip coupons. She will not have to choose between telephone and cable. Let her and her child groom try surviveing on $7.50 an hour, and then, perhaps, her mother will realize what the lives of the people she is suppose to represent are really like.

If Trig (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray
is Sarah Palin's child (instead of grandchild), this indicates that she might have another, believing that contraception is wrong.
This is the person John McCain thinks is the best choice after himself to be president? (That she might be mildly distracted by carrying and caring for a sixth child is NOT the main reason to question this. Whether Trig is her child or grandchild bears more directly on her honesty.)

Abortion issue (Reply to this comment)
by skbreese
It drives me crazy that the abortion issue seems to once again be driving a presidential election. As soon as it was announced that Sarah Pallin was the VP choice, all the focus has been on her lack of support for keeping abortions legal. Now we find that her teengage daughter is pregnant and planning to marry her teenage lover. All I can say is they deserve the miserable marriage they are now forced into, because of their unwillingess to consider the alternative. Timely essay. Sheila
