I woke up at 6:48am in a huge panic after dreaming that my 6-year-old daughter was raped. I don't ever have nightmares and rarely remember my dreams, but this one woke me from my sleep. I immediately started praying and then called the YMCA to register her and my son for Judo. I was still not relaxed though, so I started looking for things I could teach them at home today. This article REALLY helped. It was easy to understand, and there were several moves that my children can perform even at their age. I wish I had read this sooner for myself. Thank you so much for this!It really helped put my mind at ease. We will be practicing later this evening.

I feel it's time I share what I know in a way that'll help more people than I can meet in person--and this seems a great way to do that--thanks! I've started a healthy thread in the message center about printing our reviews out as a book--with some interesting revelations (Epinions "General")! Also be sure and see my other 2 guides (at the moment)--on finding online computer, electronics, and other deals (free McD's chicken sandwich w/medium drink still valid, I believe), and great, cheap eating in Vegas!

In Southeast Tennessee, my friend, Ray Auday (I know him from "special training" practice here in California, but he may not remember my name) is teaching (great group!). His e-mail is RAuday@aol.com and phone, 423-478-0095 or 423-505-7864. It's 30 miles north of Chattanooga, so it's not unlikely that I can visit the next time I'm in the area. I'm from Northeast Alabama, and I've met and practiced with another group in Huntsville. The leader there is a NASA PhD who started in the late 50s! He's a very nice guy who operates in a church building, and waited patiently for me in his pickup truck.

You meet a lot of interesting people in this organization. I met my wife at the CSULB branch, and we honeymooned in Spain, in conjunction with an international event that they were holding. I've met people from France, Israel, Japan, Spain, Russia--all over!

learned a lot after reading this. Thanks.

Too bad there's not an organization such as the one you were talking about here in eastern TN.

I'm working on getting back into shape (was sick for several months) so, right now, me and the treadmill are walking to nowhere. :)

Hi Nicole,

I feel as you do here. I'd defend my kids or grandchildren to the death but don't think I'd have the courage to fight for myself.

My son is a police officer (Sgt) and when I see him in full uniform (he's tall and muscular, I'm short and dumpy), I want to run for the hills or hide in the closet. :)

I tend to walk on the other side of the street, or wherever, when there's someone tall and rough looking close by.

In other words, I'm scared of my own shadow. :)

I forgot to add, for all responders, that a good first step for those who feel that they aren't assertive enough is to repeat the simple affirmation,"I am." Sounds really basic, but that will begin to change your thinking and outlook. Repeat that phrase to yourself, privately. Tom Muzila shared in response to a college aid's question, when he was giving a demonstration in my classroom recently.

For those looking for a good martial arts instructor--the organization I belong to is called
"Shotokan Karate of America" (http://www.ska.org)--we are a worldwide organization, headquartered in Los Angeles, with our central dojo in Carpinteria, just south of Santa Barbara. Our chief instructor is Tsutomu Ohshima, and he is the first person to teach traditional karate in the U.S., in the 1950s--a direct student (one of a handful still living) of the founder of karate, Gichin Funakoshi.

There is a link there called "Dojo Directory" which lists our schools by country and state. We have a New York dojo, as well. In Southern California, there are many good dojos--Tom Muzila teaches at Garden Grove dojo (look up contact info there) on Thursdays at 7:15pm, and there are classes almost every day at our CSULB dojo--my main one (again--see contact info). You don't have to be a student to join there. Prior to that, I couldn't afford karate classes. We are a nonprofit organization, but don't let the relatively lower price fool you--you cannot find a more authentic martial art, or a greater, more sincere group of teachers, anywhere (except, perhaps, at the "Shaolin Temple."

Thanks SO MUCH for sharing this! I wish your sister well. Even though they say New York is the "safest big city" (or one of the...), having only seen it on tv & movies, I don't feel that way about it--and one can never be too careful in a new, unfamiliar environment.

I'm only too happy to empower others in this most basic way. Too often, people are taken advantage of, and live in fear. When I was younger, and being bullied, I wanted to take karate classes, but my mother couldn't afford it--and there was no one to teach me in my family (my father was deceased). So I share what I know whenever I can. Practice this with a trusted partner--and for everyone who feels that they are not assertive enough, a karate class (or other martial art-a good teacher with legitimate credentials that you can connect with is the most important thing) could be a very good thing. I'm glad I've generated some discussion on this very important matter!

I forwared this to my sister. She just started living in NYC. I'm so afraid something is going to happen to her and keep telling her she needs to learn self-defense. Great article.

You certainly gave me a lot to think about. I do have a very difficult time being even verbally assertive, so much of this would be difficult to practice. However, if my mother or sister were ever in danger, I would defend them without a thought. As it is, I should probably enroll in some self-defense classes. Your editorial really made me think!

Blessings,

Nicole
