Ick! I hope they don't turn to me for advice, Laura, I'm really an irresponsible goof. :o) Though the folks with chronic disease sure are good at finding things about the disease to laugh at. It's more effective a depression-buster than codeine is sometimes. I'm very glad you enjoyed the essay!!

Oh, that Lorraine Hunt-Lieberson was something special indeed, Margaret. :o( And she was under-recorded! Yup, she died of breast cancer.. and so did her sister a few years before. It was something eerie when I heard the news... and thought of how she was playing a cancer patient during a US tour of concerts of Bach cantatas a few years before. BC has been bad for us opera fans... Kathleen Ferrier and Susan Chilcott also left us way too young. :o( I'm glad Swenson and Upshaw seem to be doing well, though. :o)

And nope, I hadn't heard of that side of Bach or his Ein Weltlisches Bankett before, Vic! Must go and see if any of my opera-collaborator have got a DVD of it hidden somewhere now. Thanks a bunch for the hot tip! ;o) I'd never have thought to turn to Bach for music to do with ..er.. the topic.., but then he had 20 kids, so he couldn't have been all that innocent, ay?

Thanks a bunch for stopping by. Hope October has started well for y'all!

Cheerio,
Smorgy :o)

Speaking of breasts... (Reply to this comment)

Some years ago I had the opportunity to see a mis-en-scene of Bach's "Ein Weltliches Bankett", which was basically a sex orgy (without nudity though) with naughty lines like "Folge der Lockung entbrannter Gedanken, Schmecke die Lust, der luesternen Brust und erkenne keine Schranken." (my German isn't stellar - I would translate it as: follow the lure of inflamed thoughts, taste the passion of the excited breast, and know no barriers).

Bach's Kantaten are fabulous, but I did not know he was such a party animal. I imagined him as a devout Christian glorifying God through his music. I did not really know this wild side of him. Did you?

Cheers

The late, great Lorraine (Reply to this comment)

She lost her battle a few years ago, but was it breast cancer? I thought it was cancer of some inner region. Oh well, no matter. Good post - thanks.

This is fabulous. You said people may not turn to you for advice like this, but fantastic advice you've given... maybe people will start turning to you now!

Thanks for an intriguing, humorous addition :)
