Just took our first Amtrak trip from Florida to NYC. Loved it. Confused by the reviews of Amtak? We were. But here's what we've learned directly from others who travel Amtrak, from reading the reviews carefully, and from our own experience: Don't take a long trip on Amtrak unless you reserve a sleeping compartment. It's a whole different experience. First, you have privacy. Second a place to sleep. Third, a toilet and sink. Fourth, you can control your AC. Fifth, all meals are included which you can have served in your room or have in the dining car. You also get free juice, bottle water, and newspaper. With two in a sleeper, if you count the free meals, it's about the same cost as flying. (Fly if you like; we hate air travel!) Sure it's slower than flying, but it's faster than driving, and whatcha gonna do with that auto in New York? You arrive in the middle of NYC, Penn Station, with many hotels in walking distance. No hair-raising cab rides from the airport. Oh, and on the way back, sleeper compartment passengers have a special waiting room in Penn Station with numerous kinds of free drinks, boxes of cookies, and cinnamon rolls. For vacations in New York, Amtrak is a winner.
