Re: Le Shon Ha Rah. "The tongue is a small member..." (Reply to this comment)

Thank you, CEO.
It is good to ponder gossip and backbiting from time to time.
Fleshing out the psalm you refer to, in the New Testament (James 3:5-6) there is also some pithy, notably bitter, wisdom to the effect that the tongue is a small member boasting of great things but also totally beyond taming.
Although some decades ago I immersed myself in academic philosophy, rational ethics remained humiliatingly opaque to me. Getting past the most general principles, I was soon in a morass of historical-cultural case studies. If any society has learned its morality except through religion, I am not aware of it. Confucianism might be an exception, depending on how you define religion.
Again, thanks. I write for epinions because of thoughtful comments like yours.

Le Shon Ha Rah (Reply to this comment)
by ceo
In his seminar work, Shomer Leshonecha, the Chofetz Chayim wrote that gossip, (Le Shon Ha Rah) can destroy any community. As my wise elementary school teacher said way back in the fifies, "If you have nothing nice to say, say nothing". That is the curious thing about moral philosophy. It doesn't take an advanced degree, or pondering over desert island counter examples to rules to live life most abundantly. All that is required is to master a few basic rules (the ten commandments, for instance) and use them as your map for life's journeys. Thank you for a great review. This site is far to the good for all your efforts. They are appreciated. CEO

...when my stack of books to be read falls on me! As always, an excellent review. I am an Anglophile, and descended of McDonell of Glengarry, and Morrison stock. Scotland has long been a dream of mine...I will have to check this out.
Talyseon.
PS. SAP is back up, I have started getting a flood of book and movie requests I put in. Give this one a whirl.

Those would quite possibly be my favorite portions! (Seriously.)
Thanks for this review, Patrick (well thought-out and rendered, as usual).
