Cheaper, Easier to Adjust, and Close to HomeOct 14 '08 Write an essay on this topic. The Bottom Line My son is happy he choose this and so are we as we are saving money, he is getting good grades, & he still sleeps in his own bed. College can be a big stepping stone to being an adult for most graduating H.S. seniors. With an 18 year old son who is both working and attending college he is making better choices both with his money and time compared to his counterparts. We decided that it would be less expensive and better for him to begin his college education at a local community college by taking his general education requirements there before transferring to a university. Doing this he wouldn't have very large classes, one university told us to expect more than 500 students in some freshman general education classes, and he could ease into the transition from H.S. student to college student without being overwhelmed as some students are which is causing them to drop out. We are also saving money on living expenses since he can live at home by going to a community college, again staving off another potential reason for some students to drop out, homesickness. This also saved a big chunk of money that could have gone to waste had he not acclimated well to college at a big university causing him to drop out, and also saving money as community colleges are less expensive that universities. We did look into what would be the best choices for him and his possible career choices to ensure the route he is planning on following is worth the expense and for him this was the most logical choice, plus he is much happier which is a major factor in how well he does in his classes. I think when he does transfer to a university he will be much more ready for the transition, and we do not need to worry as much about using creative funding to help him pay his way through his continued education. |
