What You Should Know About Nokia Mobile Phones

Oct 31 '08 (Updated Dec 31 '08)

The Bottom Line Unfortunately, the drawbacks of Nokia mobile phones are starting to outweigh the advantages - I hope they get the battery life problem particularly sorted out soon.

What You Should Know About Nokia Mobile Phones

While not applicable to every single mobile phone ever produced by Nokia, these are some points that are generally true about the brand that you would want to know if you are thinking of buying a new phone.

Ease of Use - Very Good

This is one area where Nokia phones tend to score highly - they have a very easy to use interface and simple, effective ways of presenting information.  This is the main reason that I keep coming back to Nokia phones - partly because I'm used to them and don't want to bother learning a new system of doing things, sure, but also because the Nokia interface is intuitive and consistent.  I've used several other makes from time to time, and I don't like any of them as much as Nokia in this regard.

Reliability - Good

Overall I've found Nokia phones to be very reliable; however my current phone (6500 slide model) I've had a lot of problems with, so I can't rate them as Very Good for reliability.  In the past I found them extremely reliable, bit as time's gone on, newer models have seemed less reliable than in the past (probably due to software problems with more applications being available, I suspect).  This is a worrying trend, but at the moment I would still tend to rate Nokia as good for reliability... I hope this isn't something I'll have to come back and change...

Pre-installed Applications - Average

The software applications that tend to be pre-installed on Nokia phones are okay, some are pretty useful - but they're fairly limited in scope and not very impressive.  This is, I think, largely due to the fact that Nokia phones don't tend to have much available memory until you stick a memory card into them, so there's not much space available for anything more interesting in terms of applications.

Technical Features - Average

Nokia phones tend to score quite highly on variety of features (some models are very versatile, others only moderately so), but the features they offer are seldom among the most advanced or sophisticated on the market at the time.  The sports models in particular often have some interesting extras (including an electronic compass on one model I owned a while back!).  The cameras on Nokia phones always seem to be middle of the range affairs, with some nice features but certainly not as good as some other makes.  The MP3/M4A player features on Nokia phones are usually good, and as far as I remember every model I've ever owned has had a radio built in (though you can't use it without headphones).

Battery Life - Poor

This has always been the Achilles heel of the Nokia range - the batteries in various Nokia phones I've owned range from decent to downright awful.  For me this isn't as great a problem as it would be to some others, as I don't use my mobile anywhere near as much as some people.  It is however a major consideration and if you're a likely to be a heavy user, it probably means that Nokia phones aren't going to be a good option for you.  Though this isn't really something I know from personal experience, I believe the business models tend to be somewhat better in terms of battery life.

Overall

Nokia mobile phones will appeal to those who want something that's easy to use, unfussy, and has a good range of features.  It is not going to appeal to those who use their mobile phone a lot or who want the latest, most advanced features.  The poor battery life is definitely the biggest problem for the range, and if Nokia don't begin to improve on their bad reputation in this regard, they're going to seriously lose ground to other brands.

I hope you found this information useful!  This is my first (and I believe it is the first!) posting in a new range of category listings on Epinions, and hopefully it's the sort of thing that was wanted!
