From Ground Zero to My House in a Week! (updated 4/9/02 and 5/3/02 and 9/2/02)

I didn't realize J & R Music was across from the World Trade Center until I explored their site a little more thoroughly. I linked to them from my Kingdombuy.com account to search for a portable CD system. I have to admit when I found out where they were and what they had been through, I felt really good about buying from them. Initially, it was their pricing that caught my eye. How they can have such great deals and pay the overhead in Manhattan is a mystery to me - except they have been there quite a while, so perhaps their property is equity and not a liability.
The Website
Their site is full. They are a huge dealer and there's much to show. A convenient toolbar at the top of the homepage will help you start to navigate to the appropriate section (video, audio, music, etc...). I emphasize start. Once you get to your section there are thousands of items you can look at. There is a search feature that will help you narrow it down a bit. I found all the info on the sides of the pages a bit much- it was overwhelming.There are some categories to click, but I was looking for "shelf systems" and that is one they did NOT have. I found what I needed under "portable systems".
At the bottom of the pages one will find customer service contact info - by email or by toll-free phone.
When I browsed and found a system I liked (see my review on the Aiwa CADW248 boombox), I clicked on the picture and got full specs and a large photo of the system. It looked like what I was after so I clicked it into my shopping cart.
I fancied a Vince Guaraldi CD so I clicked over to music, did a quick search....lo and behold - the CD I was looking at on Amazon for $13.99 was $8.99 on J & R! I quickly clicked it into the basket. I knew it was time to leave - the prices and selection were so good I could have really inflated the old plastic!
Check out was standard with the usual info (address, phone, email, credit card, etc...). Click - we've purchased.
Service
I ordered my two items on a Saturday. Immediately I got email confirmation of my order. Tuesday I received an email that the items had shipped and a UPS tracking link was provided. This link was a direct one to my package. Many online stores give you the number and make you go the UPS site and type in a zillion numbers to track your package. J & R lets you do it with ONE CLICK! Nice! My System arrived Thursday, and my CD arrived Friday! The items came from two different shipping points and traveled from New York to North Carolina. Good service!
The sound system was packed well - no styro peanuts (thankfully). They used appropriate sized boxes and large inflatible air cushions. It arrived in good working order. The CD came in a padded envelope. There was a small crack in the case, but the CD was fine. Every order comes with a hardcopy of their immense catalog and instructions about their 30 day return policy.
I am well pleased with the prices, the service, and the merchandise from this company. I will use them again. Come on - help New York! Buy something from J & R.
UPDATE - 4/9/02 I ordered a CD online from J & R on 4/4/02. It arrived today. Again, great service. The price was right, and they shipped my order the next day aftering ordering. A great company!
Update - 5/3/02 I ordered a Conair Complete Facial Spa - it was processed online within 3 hours, shipped the next day, and arrived in three days. Continued great service! Had a question and submitted by email- received a reply within 24 hours. A great company!
ANOTHER update 9/2/02 - Ordered a CD ( at lowest price found) and it arrived at my house in NC in four days! Email confirmation on the order and shipment notification within two hours!
