The Bottom Line My favorite ten Christmas movies that I've ever seen.
1. A Christmas Story (1983) - If you are one of the few people yet to see this joyful, fun-filled and touching story then tune in during Xmas as TNT plays it 24 hours in a row. Young Ralphie (Peter Billingsley) struggles to get the one thing he wants for Christmas - a Red Ryder BB gun, but everyone tells him the same thing - "you'll shoot your eye out!" I can't get enough of this film even when it's not the holiday season - it gets to the heart of the American nuclear family during the 1940's and is great for the whole family. 2. Christmas Vacation (1989) - Clark Griswald and the fam are back in this one except they don't go anywhere this time - their family comes to their house for the holidays. This is actually my favorite of the Vacation movies because it has the old slapstick humor and captures the stress and frenzy that having company during Christmas can entail. 3. It's A Wonderful Life (1946) - This classic starring James Stewart as George Bailey and Lionel Barrymore as his arch nemesis Mr. Potter is more then a Christmas movie, it's a film about hard-working people who help others more then they help themselves while being bogged down by the rich and powerful. All George Bailey wants is to travel and leave his small hometown but when he inherits his father's buisness he feels it's his duty to try and defeat the town's most powerful man. In the end, Bailey feels in order to save his business and his family he should kill himself for the life insurance. The best part of the film includes the last third in which Stewart is visited by his guardian angel who needs to earn his wings. 4. Elf (2003) - Will Ferrell plays well, an elf, or actually to be more honest he plays an ordinary man who is adopted by elves. Upon finding his real father (James Caan) who lives in New York and not the North Pole, he goes on a Christmastime adventure and falls in love with Zooey Deschanel. Innocent, funny, sweet and charming. 5. Prancer (1989) - This is a lesser known classic from my childhood that I really enjoy watching every year. A young girl living in a small town in the midwest helps an injured reindeer who she believes is Prancer. Her bitter widower-father (played wonderfully by Sam Elliott) tries to provide for his two kids as much as he can financially but tells his daughter she needs to live with her aunt for awhile. What follows is a Christmas awakening for the whole family. 6. A Charlie Brown Christmas (1965) - Though this was a TV special, you cannot not have this as part of a Christmas collection. For generations, Charles Schwartz's Peanuts has captivated audiences and continues to do so. Charlie Brown and the gang become discouraged by Christmas commercialism and decide to get at the heart of the holiday. 7. The Santa Clause (1994) - Disney movies that are not animated are not usually my favorite, however, for Christmas movies they did well with The Santa Clause. Tim Allen reluctantly becomes the real Santa Clause when Santa dies on his property. 8. Home Alone (1991) - Kevin (MacCauley Culkin's breakout role) is left home alone accidentally by his family who go on vacation. He must fend for himself until they come back - plus fight off two robbers with a devilsh plan. 9. Bad Santa (2003) - This movie is more for adults but is a great bah-humbug of a film with Billy Bob Thorton posing as a conman Santa Claus to ripoff stores. 10. Scrooged (1988) - Some may be disappointed that I did not put up "A Christmas Carol" on my list. As much as I thoroughly enjoy Dickens' moral classic, Scrooged is simply a bit more modern day fun. Bill Murray is the contemporary Scrooge buisnessman who becomes bitter by the second. Three ghosts show him his life in the past, present and future and set him straight. Great comeos and great laughs. |
