Snowflake I & II (Joy/Reason For)
Dec 24 '08
The Bottom Line Is Celebrating the Day
Snowflake (Joy): I once said that we can never return to simplicity Dang man, I shoulda been a physic the way I’m writing prophecy Just kidding But in all seriousness, it’s the only place to go from here It’s that time of year to take stock of the things about which we care We all crave responsibility, leadership and power But once we get it we can’t give it back It’s like wasting my life with you for a couple hours And I’d mean that if I wasn’t so set on spending so much of it on your expense God and Girl I love you Don’t get the priorities bent But no matter how far we are removed from the things we started from There are always those few annual moments that bring us back to when we were dumb There are always those few annual moments that make us wince with nostalgic joy Chugging egg nog, snow football with the ‘boys’ Now it’s winter break, and seeing little kids lusting after toys that were big when we were small I never doubted it’s true when people said things never change, we all just get a little more tall Bring us back to those days when we were little boys With little desire in life beyond copping that new scooter or the N64’s newest 1st-Person shooter And spending time with little girls who would always say we were strange And who to this day still call us secretly loved nicknames
Now let’s forget the deep ramble for just a little bit Not that I have a problem with it Joy is a short word because it’s so simple Easy to understand and smile at not unlike your dimples But the magnitude of it goes beyond triple Let’s remember the reason (Christ) behind the reason (Christmas) for hanging up the missile Toe Life in a snow globe Hug and kiss everybody Even those you don’t know And if the weather gets a bit too cold Throw on an oversized hoodie with me and snuggle up close
The snowflakes falling down with parachutes from the sky Is beautiful But never as gorgeous without you sitting at my side Ice is one of the most honest things out there today It makes no qualms about what it’s trying to make you do Slip and fall, break a bone or two But I made a deal with it Went something like this As long as I’m holding your hand, you’re guaranteed a safe grip
Bonfire in the middle of the frozen lake So much more than sickness there at stake Joy is never ever a single event It’s always built off of something We’ve got what the World’s missing and rejected We know there’s more to this day then opening presents Good will towards men is all well and good But if it’s only for one day of the year, call me a hypocrite Call me a fool if I take a triple dog dare to introduce metal to my lips I know everything we’ve got right now is perfection in a portrait But if you miss seeing the author of it then the whole point you’ve missed
Candlelight that nobody trusts to stay at bay for a whole night Will illuminate the setting that people describe as right Hot cocoa, mittens, gloves and frostbite We remember that my God came to earth this exalted night
Snowflake II (Reason for Joy): Away in a manger, a baby screams An announcement bigger then those he woke up had the power to dream Thin sheets don’t match the intensity of the night wind He gets body warmth from the animals and people gathered around him Humility in a place of cows Did they know the love in the eyes that they stared deeply down?
A holy night because of this holy Child Eyes were bright, skin was mild Today we kill our young and call it a mother’s protection That night something started that couldn’t have been expected Do we truly understand what was going on? A frustrated husband and a pregnant mom Absolutely nowhere to stay for the night Bet that hotel manager thought he was doing something right Gave em the barn, prolly hadn’t been cleaned in weeks No coincidence; humble beginnings for someone so meek A loose shirt was the only thing keeping the splinters off of baby Smooth skin, coo giggle laying among a butcher’s prey Animals for first images Something was familiar about em…after all he’d created them But the cow and the goats may have been the only ones to comprehend To truly understand who that in their feeding bucket was Jesus Christ, God’s only son His reason for coming? To live a life of pain Rejection and persecution would be synonymous with his name But hope so much more, death so much less Hundreds tried, but it was himself who gave his final breath Not to simply lay himself down But to conquer death And death conquered means life eternal if you haven’t figured that out yet That’s the whole reason I’m getting hype on this holiday Not for money or the gifts Can’t be sliced any other way That’s why I can relish with everyone tonight in joy Because of the birth today of this little baby boy My and your lives can be radically changed Gotta all start out though, by calling on his name
