Half of Our Lists... (Reply to this comment)
by bilbopooh
Are the same, and I really like Top Gun as well. (And really need to get around to reviewing it one of these days.) Seen 'em all but Jewel of the Nile. And though Gremlins is a little too dark for me, I still have a puzzle (probably 30 pieces or something like that) featuring Gizmo that I got a couple decades ago. Great list!

Hi ActionChick!
Sorry I never noticed your comment before. I agree, the eighties were all about fun, which I've tried to reflect in my list!! :-D :-D

Now this is a fun list. Forget pretentious hoity-toity movie critics' "best of" lists. This is a fun mix of stuff.

Fair point, it's only more recently that I've been branching out towards "foreign" films. From the eighties I loved Jean de Florette and Manon de Sources, particuarly the latter - amazing films but not the sort of thing I was looking for to put in this particular list.
My Top Ten movies of the Nineties, currently in progress, has an emphasis on more serious films... I wonder if you'll be in any more agreement with that then this? Of course it's probably still very Hollywood-biased. Damn my impressionable youthfulness (at the time, anyway)!! :-D

Ah, of course. Mr Potato Head was the true star of that movie, his acting talent was amazing! He could do baked, chipped, boiled, and jacket completely naturally.

Ha ha, I won't fall into this trap, because you always get smartasses like me expressing disagreement, and writing "what about this and that"...
The fact is that your taste is heavily skewed toward Hollywood commercial mainstream movies of the "fantasy" genre, which is something I do not appreciate. Indeed, of the movie you listed I would give only The Blues Brothers a passing grade.
I would probably list "Wings of Desire" and "Paris Texas" by Wim Wenders, Bergman's "Fanny and Alexander", Malle's "Au revoir les enfants" or Lee's "Do the Right Thing".
I am sure I would list The Shining, Blade Runner and Amadeus, my top three choices for the 80's. And, basically, here you have it....
Cheers

Okay, thanks. I think we all agree on Airplane!
I might do an alternate list at some point... some I thought were better movies but didn't strike me as having quite the right mood for what I was doing here. You'll probably disagree with that too! :-o

I haven't seen two of those. I hadn't honestly thought of Amedeus but I should have done - great film.
I wonder how many films came out in the eighties? Doing a top ten list will out of necessity mean leaving out probably hundreds of fantastic movies!
Others that I considered for the list include Bladerunner, Empire of the Sun, and several others...

Re: Fun list! (Reply to this comment)

Yes she was! I hadn't remembered either at first, but she is a very loud character in the film! She plays Goose (Anthony Edwards)'s wife. Watch it again, you can't possibly miss her performance!
When Harry Met Sally and Witness were both on my shortlist of 28 films that I eventually whittled down to this 10. I just didn't feel they quite captured the fun, carefree element that I associated with the eighties, even though I love both films. Not a fan of ET myself, and havne't seen White Nights - or Crime and Misdemeanors, come to that. Will add them to my list of films to watch :-D

of much higher quality than the ones you mention, like The Shining (1980), Full Metal Jacket (1989), or Amadeus (1984). They had both mass appeal and artistic quality.

Fun list! (Reply to this comment)

But was Meg Ryan really in Top Gun? Somehow I'd forgotten that...though I've probably tried to put Top Gun as far out of my mind as possible. (Not a Tom Cruise fan, early or late!)
Some good cheesy choices here. If we're just going for pure 80s zeitgeist, I'd add When Harry Met Sally, E.T., Witness and White Nights.
Oh, and I think I'd put Crimes and Misdemeanors on my list of favorite 80s films...

I just can't think of the eighties without thinking of BTTF and Ghosbusters - they're just so typicalof the "cheesy but who cares, it's fun!" attitude that is the 1980s.
Gremlins I associate with the 80s less to be honest, but I love the film and think it deserves to be on the list.

Top Gun could never have worked if they'd played it straight and had a really earnest lead actor... it would just have been another forgettable film with planes in it (possibly it could have been as bad as Iron Eagle??!). Airplane is, I think we all agree, pure class :-D

have a sentimentality for the 80's. I was thinking this same point when I was writing my First Blood review last night. I'd also say the same about my enjoyment of Top Gun. Seeing Tom Cruise for the first time as opposed to what I know of him today kind of helped. I'd put Airplane as a contender for the greatest comedy ever.

Hey Mike!
If I had to choose just one, it would probably be Airplane! too.
There were such great movies from the 80s that i didn't include here... I think I appreciate that decade far more now than when I lived through it!
