The Bottom Line Having an aquarium is a lot more work then buying a tank and plopping the fish in and forgetting about them.
Buying a fish tank, I thought would be a great low maintenance pet for my children....I was wrong. If you are thinking about buying an aquarium, think of these things first: 1. The tank needs to be cleaned almost daily if you have more then one fish - especially goldfish because they are very, very dirty fish. By cleaning I mean that they tank needs to be swamped out with a scrub brush (cost about $4.99) on the sides. 2. Plan on feeding the fish only once a day or you will get a spider web white net across the bottom of the tank that is almost impossible to clean without completely emptying the tank. 3. Do your homework. Do not mix certain types of fish together or they will eat each other (and this is not pretty). 4. Plan on spending about $50 plus dollars on food, water treatment kits, brushes, new filters, accessories and anything and everything else that you would have never thought would be necessary. 5. Make sure you change 15% to 20% of the water weekly to maintain a clean tank. 6. If you have kids plan on cleaning the outside of the tank about 10 times a day from fingerprints and messes. Having an aquarium is a lot more work then buying a tank and plopping the fish in and forgetting about them. It is a lot of work and care to make sure the environment is one conducive to the fish surviving and living. Good luck. |
