The Bottom Line These are my picks for the best movies of 2007.

I saw many movies released in 2007 that I really enjoyed.  There are still some others that I haven not seen yet but hope to eventually.  Some of the movies that I still haven’t seen are ones that have been on some of the lists for the best movies from 2007.  I’ve put together my picks for the best movies of 2007.

This list is based on the movies released during 2007 - including limited releases - that I have seen as of the time that I’m writing this list.  These are the movies that I enjoyed the most and not everyone will agree with my picks.  I’ll update in the future if I feel another movie should be added.  This list isn’t in any particular order.  Once again I couldn’t limit myself to only ten movies.  I kept taking some movies off, only to put them back on, so I wasn’t able to reduce my list anymore.

Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End - I know that many people weren’t that pleased with the third movie in the popular series, but I still really enjoyed it.  Once again, Johnny Depp was wonderful as the always at least slightly tipsy Captain Jack Sparrow.  For me, it was another fun adventure with characters that I really like.  The conclusion tied up everything well while also leaving the possibility of Jack returning for another adventure.

Enchanted - This delightfully entertaining Disney fairytale mixed animation and live action in a movie that both honored and poked fun at the classic Disney animated movies.  Beautiful Giselle, from the animated world of Andalasia, was transported to New York City by the evil Queen Narissa.  Giselle then had to find a way to adapt to life in a completely different world.  Certain things were a bit predictable, but the movie was so fun and entertaining that I never minded those things.  The movie is definitely worth seeing.

Music & Lyrics - This entertaining romantic comedy told the story of Alex Fletcher, a former member of Pop, a successful 80's band, who was left performing the group’s former hits.  Things started to look better once he got the opportunity to write a song for a popular young female singer with Sophie.  Hugh Grant and Drew Barrymore were delightful as Alex and Sophie.  The movie was full of wonderful music, including some songs that were intended to be Pop’s hits from the 80's.

The Simpsons Movie - The dysfunctional family from the long running television show made the jump to the big screen with a very entertaining movie.  The plot was interesting and seemed like it was something that could happen in the world of The Simpsons.  The movie poked fun at all sorts of things, including other popular movies and the show itself in a way that worked very well.  People that don’t like the show probably won’t like the movie.

Michael Clayton - This movie about a lawyer was more about moral decisions than things connected with the law.  A huge lawsuit was involved in the plot, but it really didn’t have that much to do with what was going on.  Instead, the focus was on how Michael, a lawyer who didn’t really try cases, dealt with a situation he found himself in the middle of.  George Clooney gave an amazing performance as Michael.

American Gangster - This movie told the true story of Frank Lucas, a mobster who ultimately controlled the heroin trade and the cop, Richie Roberts, who was focused on bringing Frank down.  Frank ended up being a very interesting and even likable character even though he was a drug dealer.  Denzel Washington and Russell Crowe were wonderful in their parts.

No Country for Old Men - This Oscar winning movie told the story of Llewelyn Moss, a man who stumbled across a drug deal gone bad. He made a decision that ultimately made him a target of Anton Chigurh, a cold-blooded killer who would stop at nothing.  Ed Tom Bell was the sheriff left trying to piece together what was going on in Anton’s wake.  The movie was bleak and not at all happy, but it was still a very good movie that deserves to be seen.  The acting was amazing and Javier Bardem was wonderful as Anton, creating one of the best movie villains ever.

Gone Baby Gone - This was another movie that wasn’t fun or happy, but that was very good and deserves to be seen.  The movie marks the directorial debut of Ben Affleck and I think he could go on to have a successful career behind the camera.  The movie told a very powerful story featuring more normal people in horrible situations.

Live Free or Die Hard - This fourth movie in the popular Die Hard series was a very entertaining and well done action movie.  Once again, John McClane was in the wrong place at the wrong time and he had to deal with another bad guy.  Certain elements were predictable and very much like the first two movies, but that was also part of what made the movie work in my opinion.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix - The fifth movie in the popular Harry Potter series took a darker turn, but was still very entertaining.  I did have an issue with how one or two things were handled, but I still thought the movie was very good overall.  Harry and his friends are growing up and facing more dangerous and grown up situations.  The cast still worked together wonderfully, though I had hoped that Alan Rickman would have a bit more to do as Snape.

Ratatouille - This wonderful animated movie from Pixar told the story of Remy, a rat who wouldn’t pick through the trash to find food.  Instead, he craved gourmet dishes.  He traveled to Paris and found a way to cook in a restaurant.  The movie included the amazingly beautiful animation as well as a story with a heart that Pixar has become known for.

Stardust - This magical fantasy was based on the graphic novel by Neil Gaiman.  The movie told the story of a young man trying to impress the woman he loved, only to find himself involved in an adventure with a fallen star, lightening pirates, and witches.  The movie was very fun and entertaining, though it could be too different for some people.  Michelle Pfeiffer was amazing as one of the witches who was willing to do anything to get what she wanted.

Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street - This movie told a story of revenge and murder with wonderful songs.  The story was rather twisted, but that was part of what made it so entertaining to me.  The violence was a bit over done at times, but it managed to work with everything that was going on.  This was more like a slasher horror movie, and not a typical musical.  I loved Johnny Depp as Sweeney, the man bent on revenge who was slipping further into madness as the movie progressed.  This one definitely won’t appeal to everyone, but I thought it was a wonderful movie.

Those are my picks for the best movies of 2007.  I also want to briefly mention a few other movies that I really enjoyed and that were close to being included on my list.  I did enjoy Spider-Man 3, though I did think that too much was crammed into one movie.  Ocean’s 13 was a fun movie that recaptured the spirit of the first movie that had been missing in the second.  Juno handled the subject of teen pregnancy well without being overly preachy.  August Rush told the story of a young musical genius who was hoping to find his parents.

The Bourne Ultimatum was another entertaining Bourne movie that provided some answers, though I didn’t care for all the jerky camera work.  Zodiac followed the investigation into the Zodiac murders and how a few reporters were pulled into story.  Breach was the mostly overlooked movie about a real life double agent and how he was ultimately caught.  Mr. Brooks told the story of a man addicted to killing and how he was trying to control the urges.
