Money & The MOP (Reply to this comment)
by johnfromlondon
A couple of reviewers have asked about the percentage of donations that actually goes to the
poor & needy in the various MOP houses throughout the world. The answer is 100%.
The MOP has no "professionals" who collect donations. There is no executive committee, etc. Money is donated by individuals and by groups. who give of there "time and treasure." The MOP sells CDs of songs written by Fr. HoLung and they also give concerts in Jamaica, the US, and Canada. The CDs and concerts are very professionally put together by Jamaican artists who donate their time for free.
I have been down to Kingston on several occasions to work with Fr.HoLung and the MOP. I have always returned to the USA with my spirits lifted and my heart at ease after working with the brothers and becoming engaged with some of the poor.
I believe that the number one work of the MOP is the giving of dignity to the poorest of the poor. I don't think you have to be a Christian, a Muslim,or a Jew to recognise that these are some very special people.
So come on down for a week or so to work with the MOP. I believe it might be a life changing experience.

Missionaries of the Poor - Truly A Modern Day Blessing & Wonder (Reply to this comment)
by bcamp56
Popsrock's comments regarding Missionaries of the Poor (MOP) are so vivid and more importantly, quite accurate. I have known about this mission for many years. They have brought comfort and vital assistance to thousands, without much fanfare or limelight. This group of Brothers do what they have to do for the poorest and worst off in the community. What is most striking about the Brothers of MOP is their JOY. The circumstances and the environment may make you feel a bit sad but the Brothers literally take your breath away with their joy to serve; their energy and their positive radiance. I visited MOP in Jamaica in February, 2010 and was amazed once again to witness the Brothers at work and to experience their strong sense of vocation. Taking care of the terminally ill, people with HIV-AIDS and leprosy, is no joke. Taking care of the mentally challenged and physically disabled, is no joke. Taking care of the poorest of the poor, is no joke. And yet,I watched the Brothers doing God's work tirelessly and cheerfully and thought to myself that these men who have chosen to live and dedicate their lives to taking care of "the poorest of the poor", are indeed modern day saints. I felt humbled to be in their presence and I know that I need to DO more for others in every way that I possibly can. See the attached link to MOP (Missionaries of the Poor) http://www.missionariesofthepoor.org/
Visit their website, call MOP or better yet, take a trip and actually see for yourselves what they are doing for others.
Take care all, Barb

This is one charity I never heard of but will certainly check it out.
I am printing all the reviews to mail to a friend who gives generously to the worthy causes but will need to check them out first.
Thanks for sharing your review.
My best,

things like this (Reply to this comment)
by kay67
always make me grateful for the little we have. We don't own a lot of material things although I do have some antiques I'm trying to hold onto. We just bought a house in november '08. Private only 10 years of payments. But there are folks out there that have nothing and do not know where they are sleeping tonight. I do as long as I pay our taxes, LOL. Every morning I wake up I'm glad to be alive another day.

Re: How effective is this charity??? (Reply to this comment)
by popsrocks
You won't find this in the BBB. Not enough people have inquired and its Jamaica based so that leads to less again. That said, I did try to get information. None there.
All I can say, from experience, is that Father and the brothers live in squalor and spend their full day with these poorest of the poor waking for prayer at 5AM and retiring at 10PM.
I have been witness to them as they rock and hold the dying tightly in their arms as the poor souls let out their last breath.
I do agree to keep an eye open for compliance and proper management in all charities, but for me, that's good enough.
Please let me know what you find.

How effective is this charity??? (Reply to this comment)
by mrkstvns
Sounds like quite a workload this mission is taking on...I can't help but sympathize with the need.
Nonetheless, I gotta ask: A
* Is this charity legitimate? (And how do you know? Are they BBB rated???)
* How much of their total budget REALLY goes to programs and what percentage gets wasted on executive salaries, marketing, and overhead??
Wouldn't it be a shame to send Epinions $$$ to an undeserving sham charity???

Greatful (Reply to this comment)
by texas-swede
This statement "Deformed children and old people who have been thrown out of their homes as burdens" just brakes my heart.
I don't share the beliefs of Father Ho Lung and his missionaries but I am sure very greatful that they are around.
Good people like that gives you hope.
