Thanks! I agree, it's so much better to give people the tools to help themselves as well as others. Plus, cute animals! ;)

A truly worthy charity.... (Reply to this comment)

...and I wish they would let us vote for four! I love Heifer because it is a direct solution, not a forestalling effort. Give a man a fish/ teach a man to fish...etc.
Great write up.

Thanks, Megan! I hope so - it's a worthy charity and deserving of private donations whether it makes it into the charity drawing or not...

inclusion of microloans and education --- a gift that continues giving by helping people to help themselves. Great submission! Thanks for bringing this to the community's attention where perhaps individuals will make personal donations.

Hi gliondar,
Yes, I agree about the "ripple effect." I did visit the Heifer site and there are a couple of options that you can choose for receiving NO snail mail, or just receiving the magazine, or receiving everything via email. If everyone did that, we could cut down on a ton of junk mail and save them money, too!
Glad to see you're out spreading the word too. ;)

Yeah, it does seem like they plow a significant amount of money back into fundraising, which is irritating for regular donors. But because of their policy that recipients must pass along the benefits by sharing animals and/or training with other people, I think there are additional indirect benefits that trickle down long after the initial donation that make your $$$ more hard-working.
Thanks for commenting!

and they have my vote. I like this charity enough that I recently wrote a book review related to them on Epinions (see http://www.epinions.com/review/Book_Give_a_Goat_Jan_West_Schrock/content_453839392388) in order to help spread the word about them. I haven't had the same problems with such frequent mailings, but perhaps you donate to them more frequently than I do (I only donate when giving someone a special gift). I think they have a lot of bang for the buck because participants "pay it forward"--everyone who receives animals or trees via Heifer must pass on the offspring of their gifts to others in need. So there's a ripple effect involved. Anyway, I came to this section of the site to see if anyone had said anything about Heifer and was glad to see it had been mentioned. Just wanted to second the opinion that it's a worthy cause.

I'd never heard of this charity before, but they do seem to fund some very worthy endeavors. I also give them kudos for having financial reports on their web site, plus for going the extra step of getting a BBB Seal of approval (one of the 3 or 4 credibility criteria that any careful donor should look for).
My only misgiving on this organization is that there are groups that I think work harder for the money and deliver bigger bang: for example, Doctors Without Borders has their admin expenses down under 1% of total giving but Heifers is up at 7% (not horrific, but not good either) and fund-raising accounts for 26% of the budget (yeah, you gotta spend money to bring in money, but HOW MUCH?)
Thanks for telling us about this group!
