Fighting to Stop the Epidemic - Autism Speaks
Mar 06 '09
The Bottom Line This organization is crucial in the present and in the future for the fight against autism.
As one of the many Epinions members who is personally affected by autism, I would like to bring "Autism Speaks" to the attention of those who participate in charitable giving. Autism Speaks also includes the former "Cure Autism Now" site under its umbrella, as the 2 organizations merged their efforts into one.
Autism affects 1 in every 150 which is more than pediatric AIDS, cancer and diabetes combined. It is a developmental disorder that can range in severity from mild to severe, and there is no cure or prevention for the disorder. Those with autism are impaired in their social skills and communication abilities.
Autism Speaks is a leading advocate in the fight against autism, and in the search for treatments and a cure. In 2007 they were the nation's top private funder for autism research. They are heavily involved in the scientific research to try and find answers to so many questions about this mysterious disorder. Each year they organize many fundraising events which in turn contribute millions of dollars towards the cause.
Autism Speaks is also involved in government relations so that the leaders of our country can be made aware of autism and the needs surrounding autism in the lives of many Americans. By making these efforts, they have successfully raised additional funding and much awareness about autism in our nation's capital. President Obama has already included funding for autism in the 2010 budget.
Awareness is also a major part of what Autism Speaks stands for. They have made many documentaries, and participated in others including being featured on Oprah Winfrey and in the AAP (American Academy of Pediatrics) screening guidelines for young children. They have also been involved in campaigns to raise awareness with organizations such as Starbucks, the Sundance Film Festival and YouTube.
There are many family services provided by Autism Speaks that help the families and loved ones of those directly affected by autism. Online message boards are an invaluable resource for families to connect with others who are commonly affected. Their website offers helpful information that lead families to multiple services and resources provided in their local areas.
Autism Speaks is a vitally necessary organization in the fight against autism today. They are a front runner in supporting the scientific research that will continue to lead to significant findings in the cause(s) of autism, and in the future how to cure or prevent it. For the sake of our future as parents, grandparents, families, friends and as a nation, it is crucial that we participate in the continuance of this organization.
April is Autism Awareness Month, what better time is there to contribute to this cause?
