Petsmart Is A Smart Start From The Heart
by berniez40 | Mar 08 '09
This is the finest example of what can happen when someone actually puts the object of their charity, in this case--the little animals like me--first.

Thank you so much for reading my stuff. My Momma and Pawpa were very worried for me and I'm just glad to have a home. My Pawpa says you are nice people and I bet Casey hit the Jackpot with you guys. Thanks for taking the time to write nice things about my stuff.

Ohhhh..

Taylor, I'm so happy you have a loving home. Our cocker spaniel, Casey, came from the Humane Society. He understands how scary waiting for a family can be.

God bless you and your family Taylor. We enjoy reading your daddy's reviews.

:)

Where, in any of my wife's comments here, is any statement attacking you personally? I don't see one, please point it out if you find it. You, on the other hand, are name-calling. Please stop.

From PetsMart Website.... (Reply to this comment)
by trthomp
As stated at http://www.petsmartcharities.org/about/faq.php#q12

Furthermore, PetSmart Charities is ranked with four out of a possible four stars by Charity Navigator (www.charitynavigator.org), an independent charity website that documents and rates the fiscal responsibility of all nonprofits in the U.S. In 2005, 84 cents of every dollar donated to PetSmart Charities directly supported our programs and services.

84 cents of every dollar...given to any rescue, that same dollar would be 100 cents out of every dollar. That 16 cents that isn't going to the charities is going to pay staff...not a lot of money until you once again do the math...

In 2007... (Reply to this comment)
by trthomp
PetsMart Charities donated $1,805,285.89 to 240 charities in Texas. That sounds like a lot until you do the math...it is less than $8,000.00 per rescue.

Running a rescue is not cheap. Spaying or neutering is Between $75 and $300.00 per dog. Feeding the dog takes money. Many rescues have an overhead for a shelter... The list of expenses is never ending for a healthy dog...add in a dog like your dog, and the dollar signs roll.

Again, the rescues need the money, the rescues that are taking care of the animals, not the corporate charities that skim the money before donating it the rescues...

For the record.... (Reply to this comment)

I did not trash your review. There are things in this review that are not accurate, and the facts can be verified.

I DID however vote for this charity as one of my 3, since our rescue benefits if this charity is chosen.

However, it is a misconception that the rescue you got your baby from is run by Petsmart Charities. The rescue is in more need of this help than PetsMart Charities. The rescue, ANY rescue, needs help now. Giving to PetsMart Charities is not giving to the rescues.

I will look to see what I can find for how much of every dollar actually makes it to rescues that PetsMart Charities "support".

Terri :-)

P.S. Thanks for the snide comment on my review. I am sorry you feel having facts stated is trashing your review.

And something I missed before... (Reply to this comment)
by trthomp
PetsMart Charities does not have a network of vets and foster homes. Each rescue is responsible for everything. All PetsMart does is basically provide a space for adoptions to happen, and donate a little bit of money to each individual rescue organization.

I am not sure where the break down in communication happened between you and the rescue, but this would have been much more appropriately written to support the rescue.

Call the rescue, call PetsMart. They will both confirm what I have said, though some store managers DO manage to "smuggle" some food to the rescues...

Petsmart does not pay for medical, so if they told you that, well yeah. Of course, I suppose there is always the exception, but as a rule Banfield and PetsMart do not provide medical care. In fact, they often charge more than other vets in the area.

Petsmart won't even donate food that has been opened anymore. They also have stopped providing staff to help maintain any areas that cats reside in. It is up to the rescue now to provide people to clean the cat cages twice a day.

Actually, the rescues get very little help from Petsmart. Northwest Animal Companions is a Petsmart Charities participant. We get a small contribution for every animal adopted through the store, and that's it.

Any monies paid out by a rescue are paid for by donations to the rescue from the public. Banfield charges the charities a huge amount of money to treat any animal, so they are of little help.

That $1.00 donation you give at the register!? Well, the charities see only a small potion of that buck. For each dog we adopt out, Petsmart donates between $15 and $20.00, depending on if it is a special event weekend...those 2 weekends a year we get the $20...

Don't get me wrong, I am not putting them down, but they don't give anything to the rescues to help with that cherry eye! They do provide a location for rescues to present their charges for adoption, so that is extremely helpful.

Re: Taylor's a lucky dog! (Reply to this comment)
by berniez40
I am very lucky. Thanks to Petsmart I went from a little mutt w/a death sentence to King of the Household. It's really funny because my Momma and Pawpa think they're the lucky ones. The folks at Furever Friends and Petsmart Charities are the real heros to us all. Even a little dog with Double Cherry Eye like me can see that. I even heard about a bunch of my buddies being saved by something Petsmart sponsors called "The Rescue Waggin." My Pawpa says you write really good reviews, so thanks for reading my stuff.

Taylor

Hi Claire,

I extend my welcome to all the animal charities, but this one saved my life, so I am definitely biased. My Pawpa says you write good reviews, so I want to thank you for taking the time to read mine and especially for leaving a comment.

Hey Bill (and Taylor!), looks like we had similar ideas on what kind of charity to write about. Your write-up is infinitely funnier though (as always, lol).

Take care,

Thanks Lulu......He makes a pretty cool Pawpa, and he's real easy to teach tricks to. Did you know it only took me one time to sit down after he raised a finger before he knew to give me a treat? Now I think he has it for life. I can even make him give me a treat for shaking paws with me. He's pretty smart I guess. Thanks for taking the time to read my stuff, and thanks even more for getting your Mom to send me the memo.

Your Pal,

Taylor

I really think you should get your next animal from the rescue missions these guys run. Furever Friends saved my life, but they are only one of many organizations sponsored by Petsmart Charities. I think you should go to their web site.

My mom takes me to Petsmart all the time. She says she wishes we could take home all the animals to be my brothers and sisters, but I am a handful all by myself.

My mom found me at a shelter too. Those places are really scary. She called my dad and said she was bringing me home. My mom and dad love me very much, so I'm a very happy dog just like you!

You did a really good job writing this while Papaw wasn't looking.

Oops! Gotta go. Here comes my mom.

Love,
Sugar
