National Center for Missing and Exploited Children

Mar 08 '09

The Bottom Line No matter what you endorse, make sure the donations go TO the charity and it is in good standing with the BBB

In conjunction with the proposed April Charity Write-Off for Epinions, I think there is no charity or website more deserving than the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, sometimes as referred to as MissingKids.com.

Let me state first that 94% of their donations apply directly to the foundation to support services. As important as the rainforest, animals, water, food, and land is, finding a missing child ranks much higher with me and helping to eradiate exploited children is of great importance as well.

Their services include:
~National resource center and clearinghouse for missing and exploited children
~24 hour toll free hotline for intake reports and leads
~Cyper tip line for public and electronic providers for internet related child sexual exploitation
~Information about services and federal programs for missing and exploited children and families
~Coordinates public and private programs to locate, recover, and reunite missing children and families
~Technical assistance and training for individuals and law enforcement to prevent, investigate, prosecute and treat cases
~Assistance to families and law enforcement in locating and recovering, nationally and internationally
~Use of public databases to provide analytical support and technical assistance to law enforcement
~Tracks attempted child abductions
~Technical assistance and training to law enforcement for identifying and locating non-compliant sex offenders
~Forensic technical assistance to law enforcement
~Works to reduce distribution of child pornography on the internet
~Operates child victim identification program to assist law enforcement in identifying victims of child pornography
~Develops programs and information about internet safety
~Deploys National Emergency Child Locator Center during national disasters
~Provides innovative and model programs, services, and legislation for missing and exploited children
~Annual report for missing children reported to NCMEC to Department of Justice
~Guidance to state and local governments and nonprofit agencies to use school records and birth certificates to locate missing children
~Team Adam, rapid response system of retired law enforcement officers for on-site technical assistance to law enforcement agencies
~Amber Alert

Their website offers an applet that can be copied and pasted to your personal website that runs a constant stream of missing children including their photos and personal data. It is quite sobering to watch that steady stream of lost faces pass by. When I had my own website, dedicated to teenage suicide prevention, I featured that applet proudly.

The NCMEC web site offers so much more information that is helpful to parents and children alike. You can find information about events in your area that help support this cause, especially the child identification kit program, as well as how you can help through your donation of money or time to eradicate this terrible crime.

You can link, through this website, to the Amber Alert, and receive information immediately on an abduction. Immediate response is critical in these situations.

Yes, I know that there are a million causes out there that are beneficial and important but what could be more important that saving one innocent child?

Thanks,
Susi
