I think I read and reviewed that book. The women for generations have enjoyed miso soup if I recall correctly...No, it's leek soup, sorry, but both are extraordinary good and healthy. Enjoyed your review!

I must confess I have also used these Babelfish translators when I need to write in Dutch. If you try the trick of translating from English to Dutch (or whatever) then back to English...you'll get a laugh and never try this again!
Cheers

Yup, it's all that walking, and the MINDFUL eating - they savour every bite and every sip, unlike here, where it's quantity that trumps quality. And fast foods are everywhere you look. The cities encourage walking, since people not just work in the city, but also live in them. Over here, outside of NYC, perhaps, most people live in the suburbs where a car is a necessity to go just to the grocery store.
I love Paris - the most beautiful city, it's true - and the food is just delicious. My major beef with Paris is the dog poop on all the sidewalks - although every morning the water trucks wash them all down the drain, but you gotta be alert and agile in avoiding stepping in them!

Yes!!Thank goodness. I couldn't eat anywhere if it hadn't been. One problem though. There are no "ashtrays" outside so the butts are everywhere. Luckily Paris is great about cleaning their streets. Jo

Smoking is now banned INSIDE Paris bistros and restaurants. The sidewalk portions.

LOL I used Google translate but what is really sad is that I took 14 years of French and can't speak hardly one word! I did help us get around but only barely.

Interesting Paul and Stephen you are right. The buildings in residential areas are not high and even those with 6 floors do not have elevators. We walked up a hefty flight of stairs every day.

None of the French soldiers or airmen I've met over here are overweight either.
They do smoke a lot though and when I was in France, esp. Paris, they had no problem smoking and blowing it at you in bistros after they found out that you were an American.
I think Parisians eat well because they know how to and because French cuisine offers them so many chances to do so. The smoking really annoys me, though!
The French troops here in A-stan have some interesting field rations that in many cases are better than ours.

is doing very well in France: it's the best market after the US. I think that lack elevators (or of functioning elevators, since repairing elevators is not a French forte) has something to do with lesser obesity in France.
