The Bottom Line No bottom line.
The girl came back on Thursday after what Stewart figured was feigning illness just to keep hi a s s itching a few days longer out of spite. He dreamt everynight since she left of different times in his life, mostly a bar he frequented called The Whiskey Pig. He dreamed of Jen, his favorite bartender, and his favorite pub fare, a Scotch Egg. He dreamed of smoking cigarettes and drinking Guiness. At times he even woke up with a hangover. "What's wrong with you head?the girl asked on Friday. "Nothing." Stewart replied, his head fogged and his tongue dry. "Tell me your favorite color head." "Right now or back then?" Stewart spat out, irritated. "Hmmm...right now...head." the girl spat the word head right back at him. "Green...like your eyes young lady."the spit jousting continued with "lady." "Aw, how sweet you old bastard. And I'm not young.I'm 74.And these aren't my original eyes.My first eyes were blue. Like your ugly face." "Have I offended you somehow you little b itch?" Stewart pronounced " b itch as if he was addressing a sweetheart. Something almost sad flitted briefly across the girls face and Stewart was afraid that more retribution was about to follow his outburst. "If you're thinking I'm going to hurt you more for calling me that...you are so right, head." the girl rolled the word head off her tongue as if talking to her favorite puppy. "Do your worst. I don't think you can hurt me anymore than having to see your mousy little face every morning. In fact, please just take me out of this goo and be done with me.I'm not answering any of your stupid questions anymore anyway."Stewart shut his eyes. The girl leaned close and whispered in Stewart's ear but he wasn't sure he heard her right. He closed his eyes and started to cry. |
