The Bottom Line This is my first ever write off!  I hope you will contribute!

I Need a Hero: My First Write Off!

Growing up, every child needs a hero.  I had several.  Some were drawn from real life; I mean, I met Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldren.  That was a huge thing to me.

Some I drew from history.  The exploits of Alexander the Great thrilled me, because hidden in the sub-text was a hint that he, like me, was gay.  Gandhi was a huge inspiration, and I was seven before I figured out that Sigmund Freud was not a canonized saint.

But my real heroes were four coloured and came out monthly and cost me twelve cents to visit.  I refer of course to Super Heroes.

Superman, Batman, Green Lantern, and the Legion of Super Heroes from DC Comics, the X-Men, Spiderman, and the Fantastic Four from Marvel.  These were my heroes; these are who I wanted to grow up to be.

I thrilled to their exploits, worried over their perils, all confident that in the end, everything would work out the way it should.  I wished heartily for the power to read minds, to turn invisible, and in my more anti-social moments, for the Hulk's ability to transform and smash my tormentors.

I learned the art of the Archetype from my heroes, and to appreciate the morality play.  I could gain much insight into my friends by discovering who they liked, and what powers they wanted.  Would you rather be able to fly, or the power to turn invisible?  One shows an attitude toward action and instinct, the other a more cautious, insightful personality.

Super Heroes have been called our modern mythology.  And with the block buster movies of recent years, and series like Smallville, they are not just for kids and geeks anymore.

So I am proposing a write off about our heroes; I of course encourage the inclusion of Costumed Crusaders like Superman, The Spirit, and Wolverine, but if your hero was Alexander the Great, and you want to review Oliver Stone's movie, or Mary Renault's Fire from Heaven, go for it.  If you want to include The History of English-Speaking People by Winston Churchill, go ahead.  Just be sure to include why they are YOUR hero.

I think I will accept submissions through the end of May.  So tie an towel around your neck, and wear your underwear on the outside!

Thanks!
