The Bottom Line Try a library first, let them sit thru a childs story reading time.

Taking your child to a book store and letting them see all the books will encourage him or her to look at books. A parent should guide the child in the general direction of the appropriate age books but let the child do the choosing. Some children will be more comfortable in books with pictures only, while others may decide on pictures and a story. Let the child browse thru the rows of books, then let him or her pick several books to look at. Do not discourage them on the type of books they may be interested in. Have them sit at a desk and read part of the books they have chosen. Before leaving the store let them choose which book or books they would like to purchase. Give them the money and let them make the purchase. A child will cherish the book longer when they pick it out and get to pay for it themselves.
