I know that some hated "Borat" and provided "Volver" as a substitute.

The Queen, The Prestige, The Illusionist (I know), and a few others on your lists. However, I really thought Borat was kind of... sickening.. LOL
Nice list!

So Many Movies..... (Reply to this comment)
by artbyjude
So little time. 2006 and 2007 were lost years for me, with three major surgeries and a lot of changes in my life: Too many to even allow me to watch TV and hence watch a DVD , let alone go to the movies. I will return to this list again when I can actually start to catch up. Thanks for the motivation!

Excellent list (Reply to this comment)

I loved every movie in your top ten that I've seen, so clearly I'm putting Mongol and Shortbus on the queue immediately. Great stuff, thanks.

Over-/under-rated (Reply to this comment)
by Stephen_Murray, in Movies
I'm actually woefully underappreciated, at least in my own opinion. I was in the minority liking "Thin Red Line" and think that "Days of Heaven" was gorgeous. "Overappreciated" isn't a euphemism for "bad," though I might make that case for "New World."
"Brick" played film festivals in 2005, but was released in NYC and LA 31 March 2006, elsewhere in limited release a week later. It is atop your list of best 2006 movies, and one of 6 overlaps on our top-ten lists.
"Diving bell" can go on my list of unseen 2007 movies.

Malick Overrated...? (Reply to this comment)

You're overrated!!!!
Just kidding.
I should note that The Diving Bell & the Butterfly is not a 2006 since it premiered at the 2007 Cannes Film Festival. I think you should correct that. Overall, great list. I think I would've put Pan's Labyrinth at #1 officially since Brick was really a 2005 film.

I knew you'd seen one, 'cause I linked one of your reviews. And I saw none in theaters.

"Black Book"... (Reply to this comment)
by jsommersby, in Movies
...is a definitive must-see -- I dare anyone to find a boring moment in it, which is quite the accomplishment being that its 2 1/2 hours long. Probably the most entertaining film of its year and a career-best from the hot-and-cold director Paul Verhoeven.

two of your top 10. How's that for someone who never goes out to the movies?
Even your "also rans" look interesting -- at least some of them do. Very valuable listing here. Thanks.
