If you are reading about the Nikon D1x, you know what you are getting yourself into already... the single best camera I have ever shot.
The controls are very much like the Nikon F5, so if you are used the F5, the learning curve is cut short.
I found very little complications; the controls are all right where you need them when you need them, from shutter priority modes to focus modes to the ISO to the Metering system, if you are a beginner, it may take you a little longer to learn this camera, but you can still take great shots while learning. The camera is like having a vehicle with auto-pilot, the more you learn, the less you use the auto-pilot. As a pro, I find more useful items every time I shoot, the more you use the camera, the more it becomes an extension of your arm.
The custom white balance is GREAT, and you can shoot in RAW mode too, this gives you the ability to adjust the white balance after you have taken your photographs via the Nikon Software. RAW photographs shot in NEF format are larger and a little harder to work with due to size, but worth it since you can adjust the lighting, contrast, white balance etc on your computer, this makes your camera a lot more forgiving. Adobe Photoshop CS can view the NEF files now without additional software.
Oh yeah, did I mention the metering system? The Nikon 3 metering modes are incredible, from spot metering, center weighed to the 3D Matrix. Initially my camera was set to 3D Matrix Metering, but as my experience increased, I found myself using the spot and center weighted metering more often. VERY accurate and all the options you need.
The biggest downfall to digital cameras is the cost. The biggest downfall to most point and shoot Digital Camera's is the quality. With the D1X, you are able to shoot all the pictures you want and toss out what you don't need, so for the pro photographer, you win by numbers.
The LCD is large and very clear. You can view several photographs at once, or zoom on one selected photograph.
I have never shot to anything larger than a 512 card, but I have read that you can write to 1 gigabyte and larger.
There are several upgrades you can purchase for you camera that will increase the buffer size and allow more rapid shot, this information is available on the Nikon site.
Oh yeah... Re-chargeable battery!!! Can it get any better than this... The battery life lasts me well through an entire photo shoot and the charger has a refresh for when the battery starts to fade.
With digital, you will need to be a little more sensitive with your whites, otherwise you will blow them out. The Nikon histogram can show you the levels you are shooting at and any blown out whites on your LCD. I found this to be very handy when I have to get that important shot and want results now.
I recommend getting a better LCD cover than the one that it came with, I use the HOODMAN, the bellow will allow you cover the LCD and view pictures in direct sunlight.
I was not able to get the Firewire port to work, but I only tried once.
The only thing I don't like about Nikon digital is the 1.5 CCD, which means any lens you use, your focal length will be multiplied times 1.5. For you longer lenses, it means you get more distance for you money, but for the wide angle users, you will need to buy lenses that are made for the digital cameras to get the wide angle or distortion you may desire.
The image quality is un-touchable.
