American Idol Season 8 - And Then There Were 5
Apr 29 '09
The Bottom Line It's the top 5 y'all.
We are now down to the final five and I think we can officially consider this the stretch run. We've cut all the fat, and now it's just the nitty gritty. Joining me as guest judges are http://epinions.com/user-shantel575 and http://epinions.com/user-rudixeno, two hardcore fans. They are lethal y'all.
The Hot List (based on last weeks performances)
1. Adam Lambert - They might start calling this competition American Adam.
2. Allison Iraheta - I just wish she'd stop making funny faces.
3. Kris Allen - Still annoys me, but now the judges love him too.
4. Danny Gokey - Maybe he'll notice that I've dropped him twice and do better.
5. Matt Giraud - It's been nice knowing you Matt.
The Departed
1. Young Jasmine Murray
2. Young Jorge Nunez
3. Young Alexis Grace
4. Young Michael Sarver
5. Young Megan Joy
6. Young Scott MacIntyre
7. Young Lil Rounds
8. Young Anoop Desai
I like the classy outfits already. They're singing some of the most classic American songs of all time according to Ryno.
I received a message late last night (I'm watching this early Wednesday) about how my girl Kara's arms are a little small and that she needed some muscle tone. No way. She's perfect. Well, except for those ears.
Jamie Foxx is the mentor tonight. Let's hope no one is a Miley Cyrus fan.
Jamie has won awards, he's been in big movies, and he played Ray Charles like no one else could play Ray Charles. But that's not even his biggest accomplishment. Check out the video below to see his greatest work.

Kris Allen is up first singing The Way You Look Tonight. Foxx was impressed with him. It's a very tender and classy performance and what can I say, the dude is just likable. He's annoying, but very likable. Out of the five left, he has the worst vocals, and yet he could challenge for the top two. Shantel says she loves the song he chose and he delivered it well, but it wasn't a blow away performance. Rudi says his performance was pleasant, on key and lively, but it wasn't "Idol worthy". Randall says it was his best performance to date. Kara says he's set the technical standard high for the evening and says he's a dark horse. Paula calls him a contemporary crooner. Simon says the performance was a bit wet. It was safe and good, but not incredible.
Allison Iraheta just turned 17. She's an old 17. She's singing Someone To Watch Over Me. Foxx told her to sing to her family, since she's kind of young to be in love. Foxx is a pretty good mentor. If everyone wasn't so Adam crazy (and deservedly so), this girl would be the talk of the competition. This was just awesome. May have to buy this single. Shantel thought it was her best performance to date, but thinks she may end up in the bottom three, just because. Rudi says that she slayed it. Randall says it was the gruff bomb. Kara says it was gut wrenching and deeply emotional. Paula says she was alluring and very tender. Simon says he has a horrible feeling, that even though her performance was great, that she may be in trouble tonight. He thought it was a bit mechanical.
Matt Giraud is up next with My Funny Valentine. He's trying to pull off the cool look way too hard. It probably wasn't fair for him to be after Allison. He did pick up his performance in the end and finished strong. Shantel says that he brought his A game tonight and this was the week for him to bring it. Rudi thinks that he brings it and that it was his best performance to date. Randall says it was a bit pitchy, but it was a hard song to sing. Kara says that he wasn't emotionally connected. Paula says she loved what he did with the song. Simon says it was the only believable and authentic song of the night. He also calls it brilliant.
Rudi has a great line.
It's too late for Matt I'm afraid. Hard to catch up with a young audience singing 50 year-old standard's, but he may have priced himself out of performing at my daughter's Bat Mitzvah.
Danny Gokey is singing Come Rain Or Come Shine. I absolutely love his voice for this song. I think it got a bit corny near the end, but the first half of the performance was really good. Shantel thinks he knocked it out of the park. Rudi thinks he started his performance meekly and delivered it way too late. Randall says he could sing an album of these types of songs. Kara says he had swagger tonight and that's what he's been missing. Paula says it was stellar. Simon says he had confidence and his performance was outstanding.
I wonder how Adam's more theatrical voice is going to sound with these types of songs. It's definitely going to stand out and be different. He's singing Feeling Good. He's very lucky to go last, because we've had very similarly styled performances, and then he was able to come in and change the game. The dude knows what he's doing. Shantel didn't care for it at all. Rudi thinks he nailed it. Randall says it was a little too Broadway, but it was another good performance. Kara says he confuses her, but in a good way. Paula says he makes her feel better than good. She compared him to Michael Phelps. They'd probably smoke weed together too. Simon says he feels that Adam wants to win and that's most important.
Here's what Shantel had to say about Paula tonight:
Did someone give Paula a smart pill or did they take away her "happy-filled" Coca Cola cup? She has actually made some sense the last couple of weeks and she seems to have been cured of her babbling of nonsense. I think someone hired her a speaking coach so that she would not sound quite as stupid having to constantly speak after Kara, who actually has a CLUE what she's talking about and how to articulate words.
She's kind of like Sylvester Stallone to me. When she tries to speak smartly, she puts together words that simply don't go together. It's like she popped open a dictionary to learn a new word and she was going to use it no matter if it fit or not. Stallone does that all the time. I kind of like the goofy Paula who steps over herself.
Shantel thinks the bottom two will be Matty and Allison, just because. She actually expects Allison to go home. I'd be appalled if that happened. I think the bottom two will probably be Matty and Allison too, but I expect Matty to go home. Rudi didn't give me his thoughts on the bottom two, but thinks that Adam and Allison will be the top two folks come this time in three weeks.
Seacrest out!
