American Idol Season 8 - And Then There Were 4
May 05 '09
The Bottom Line It's the top 4. This is money time.
One of my favorite people in the whole wide world is here to join me tonight. Our special guest judge is none other than the lowest jones of them all, Low Jones.
I spent some time with Low Jones and the family just over a month ago and had a great time. Now he just has to come back to the Bay Area for a weekend.
The Hot List (based on last weeks performances)
1. Adam Lambert - He's the LeBron James of this (censored).
2. Allison Iraheta - She's underrated, but Simon pointed out what I've been pointing out all along and that scares me.
3. Kris Allen - I enjoy Danny's style much better, but I'm not blind to see the love this guy gets.
4. Danny Gokey - Daniel-san needs a big night.
The Departed
1. Young Jasmine Murray
2. Young Jorge Nunez
3. Young Alexis Grace
4. Young Michael Sarver
5. Young Megan Joy
6. Young Scott MacIntyre
7. Young Lil Rounds
8. Young Anoop Desai
9. Young Matt Giraud
There's been a lot of news around which judges are going to stick around and which aren't and you know, I think it's all posturing. The only one who probably has to worry is the object of my affection, Kara. She's only on a one year deal and though I think she's made the show better, it's not my call. Simon can probably call his shot and name his price. Randy gives the show some credibility when it comes to someone with musical talent (which Kara also has) and Paula is the one with the former star power. So who knows?
Paula made a bit of noise just today by premiering her new single on Ryan Seacrest's radio show. I blogged about it on SonicClash.com, for those who want to hear the song. I believe she'll sing it, I mean lip sync it, tomorrow night.

The contestants are going to pair up and perform duets tonight. Slash is the mentor tonight. Adam says this is his favorite of all the theme weeks. I wonder if Slash mentors them on Guitar Hero too?
Adam Lambert is performing Whole Lotta Love. He's really working that reverb. This is the Adam I don't usually care for because his voice becomes whiny, but the guy has legit star power. You can't just pretend it's not there. Low Jones says it was a great performance and thinks he did the song justice because not nailing a Led Zeppelin song could be bad news. His wife Autumn added that she doesn't understand all the Adam love from the judges. Randall says he was a rock star tonight. Kara calls him a rock god. She was very inspired. Paula's boobs say that he's a whole lotta perfect. Yep, she came up with that one all by herself. Simon says it it was an untoppable performance. I think Adam needs more eye shadow.
Allison Iraheta is doing Cry Baby. Other than Kelly, Carrie, or my favorite, Fantasia, I'm not sure if there's been a stronger girl contestant. I know someone will say Tamyra Gray got screwed, but whatever. Even Jordin Sparks wasn't this good. I don't know that it was good for her to follow Adam, but I still liked her performance. Low Jones says it was good vocally all around, but she probably would've been better off doing a different song. Randall says he doesn't love the song choice. Kara says Janis is the right choice, but maybe not the right song. Paula says she should act in the bio pic of Janis Joplin. Simon says it was a terrific vocal, but there wasn't a ton of originality.
Danny Gokey and Kris Allen are doing a duet called Renegade. These duets are actually cop outs. They don't count when it comes to voting, though they could help or hurt just based on how the fans take them. But I'm going to guess that they're doing them instead of having the contestants sing twice because they aren't confident they can get eight performances done in an hour. If I want to see the Idols in concert, I'll go see them in concert. I'm interested in the competition.
Kris Allen is doing Come Together. I'm kind of torn because I think the dude gets an A for effort, but just vocally, he's walking up hill. It was definitely fun to watch, sans the funny faces he was making.
Here's what the lowest of all Jones' had to say about it:
From a performance standpoint, the arrangement was interesting and sounded good, but from a vocals standpoint it was just ok as it wasn't the right song to show off vocals on.
Randall says he loved that he was playing the guitar, but he knows he's not a rock dude. Kara says it wasn't great and he was trying too hard. Paula says it was risky to do the Beatles, but he was artistic on it and his imprint was all over it. Simon says it was like eating ice for lunch. He must be on a diet.
Danny Gokey is performing Dream On. Hmmm. How is he going to end it? That's all that anyone's going to care about. I was slightly uncomfortable because it looked like a bearded Robert Downey Jr. singing up there. I'm not sure he quite hit all the screams, but he went for the big one at the end.
Low Jones had another dandy.
This was the worst performance of the night. This song is just way to big for Danny and the ending was painful...like a train wreck you could see coming.
Randall says it was alright but he gets an A+ for effort. Kara says he took the swagger comment a bit too far. But she commends him for taking chances. They keep going for that wide shot and then when Paula bends over a bit and shows off that huge cleavage, they quickly zoom to her face. There must be a one second cleavage rule. I didn't even hear what she said. Simon says the big scream at the end was a bit over the top. He still thinks he's going to be safe.
The last duet ends the night. Adam and Allison are out there trying to out diva each other and I think Adam is winning. He might be able to out diva Beyonce.
I think Kris goes home tomorrow. It's not just because of how harsh the judges were on his performance. It's truly because I think that during this top four, you could tell who the best three singers were. He was kind of like the red-headed step child of the group.
GG out!
