Opinion Summary
Worthy improvements, but true CD audio quality as the press spews? HAH!
by monoblocks | Jan 17 '02
Pros: Big step up in PC sound quality from past mass-market products.
Cons: Burned audio CDs still bland; invasive Creative software, crash-prone install, silly remote.

I meant to write this sooner, but it's just one of those things that happens to get pushed off...

The Audigy eX now works flawlessly, as opposed to the problematic, error-ridden mess that was in February of this year. The fix? Reinstall Windows. After the harddrive was wiped clean and WinMe was installed, the SoundBlaster software went on smoothly, without any lockups or glitches. All aspects of the Audigy eX, including the previously dysfunctional mic input on the Audigy Drive operates as promised. Moreoever, the sound quality of ripped music seems to be noticeably better than before, especially audio CDs. But audio copies are still relatively easy to pick out from original material; that regard did not change (though I didn't expect it to, either, not with a middling (meddling?) platform like Windows running in the background. Even after the Dell's harddrive died and I was forced to reinstall Windows and everything else again about a month ago, the Audigy's clean installation and continued flawless operation impresses.

The solution to all the problems: reinstall the OS. Whether the problem was with Dell, Microsoft, or Creative Labs, something as fundamental as a sound card SHOULDN'T involve starting from Square One (okay, I know firsthand that the Audigy eX is more complicated than most, but it's still JUST a soundcard).

After buying my Logitech Z-560's, I am now looking for a good sound card, and this one caught my eye from the get-go. Your review was absolutely excellent with meticulous attention to detail (did that sound redundant? Oh, well!) I'd like to thank you for taking the time to craft such a helpful and comprehensive review. I'm that much closer to shelling out the bucks for it now!

Best,
Daniel

A neverending saga that's about to go finito. (Reply to this comment)

I've pretty much given up getting Windows to recognize the mic jack input on the external Drive box, and have relocated the PC mic back to the traditional input on the back of the Audigy. The six hours spent uninstalling, relocating, and reinstalling the Audigy and it's hardware appear to have fixed the blue screens we were having on boot-up, plus identified a possible bad PCI slot on the Dell's motherboard. However, at this point I really don't care much anymore about getting this soundcard to work like it's supposed to; just as long as it does most of what it's designed to do I'll live with it.

After all of this headache, I'm tempted to lower my rating on eX, but it still performs all other tasks as I first reviewed.
