Mother's Day 2009? It's The Thought That Counts

The Bottom Line A small gesture, a kiss/hug/pretty card or a special gift will all be appreciated on Mother's Day 2009. For myself? A robust potted plant  would be nice ;-)

When I woke up early this Mother's Day morning there were two large and colorful cards that greeted me.  Yes, both proclaimed Happy Mother's Day with a profusion of curly cues, bows and hearts plus some clever drawings that made me chuckle.

One was from our 2 rescue dogs, Nicky and Malabear Pupaya, the other 'from' the long-haired Tuxedo cat who signed hers with a paw print. And although DH and I have no human kidlets of our own, I was still touched by the thoughtfulness of this Mother's Day gesture.

Mothers I Have Known, And Not

Adopted at a very early age, I never knew my biological Mom, though she did call a time or two before I was 10. My adoptive Mom was in my life for just 13 years; I never saw her again after that, though she did write a few heartfelt notes over the years.

My Step Mom arrived in my life just one year later, and is still going strong at age 83! A woman who can purchase whatever she likes, she is my sole surviving parental 'unit' and can be considered tough to buy for, unless you know just exactly what she needs/wants and truly likes.

Tried And True Gift Ideas: YMMV

She has a tender spot for very mushy, fou fou cards but would rather have any card today rather than none. Her name is Thelma, and over the years I can't quite call her Mom, but have come up with a name that seems to suit, Thel-Mom, with which I boldly address her annual Mother's Day card.

I'll choose a card that's large with big print, proclaiming my affection and admiration for the many things she done over the years. Along with The Card, I'll include some of my handmade soap or some extra rich lotion or cream for her dry and sensitive skin.

Or maybe a favorite new book or, don't laugh, even a small handful of her very favorite panties, (a done deal ever since she fell under the spell of those amazingly silky and light Bali Skimp Skamp...can I get an amen from the ladies out there?).

Coupled with my personal appearance, a hug and a kiss, the card is the most cherished of Mother's Day presents, however small.  Others in our large, blended family may opt for the traditional lunch or dinner at a favorite restaurant, and you will have your own family traditions.
And Mothers, being the forgiving and generally nurturing creatures they are, will accept, (with scarcely a visible wince), just about anything we should choose to bestow. Almost always in good grace, though I did return the just barely licked Kirkland biscuit my own dear Lab/Border Collie and Husky mix grrrl did generously drop on the comforter for Mother's Day 2009.
