About Me: A clean home is a sign of a broken computer.

Great for Hardwood Floors

Written: Nov 16 '10 (Updated Nov 16 '10)
Pros:Portable, gets under appliances well, vacuums and dusts at the same time
Cons:Replacement parts can get expensive, uses electricity
The Bottom Line: A really nice way to clean viny, tile and wood floors.  Vacuums & sweeps at the same time.

My daughter had a difficult pregnancy and I have been with her and her husband for the past five weeks.  She was on bed rest, then admitted to the hospital, and finally came home with her newborn baby.  I am here to help with the cleaning, laundry, cooking, and of course enjoying my granddaughter.  When it comes to cleaning their hard surfaced floors, I have been very impressed with the Swiffer Sweeper Vac.

At home I have a broom, a mop and a vacuum, and I use all of them to keep my vinyl and hardwood floors clean.  Now that I have used the Swiffer Sweeper Vac, I just might consider buying one when I return home!

This is an improvement on the simple stick vacuum, because not only does it have a powerful mini vacuum, it also uses the Swiffer duster style cloths that pick up dust, pet hair, crumbs and dirt.  It is intended to be used on wood, tile or vinyl floors, and can even be used on steps that are not carpeted.  I even used this to clean deep window sills!

One of the few problems I can see with having this cleaning tool is that it does need to be plugged in to recharge itself, and I have found the vacuum starts losing power by the time I am finished cleaning my daughters dining room and kitchen (and they are not large rooms).  It probably lasts for about five minutes before it starts to lose some power.  When it is charged sufficiently a green light comes on.

The unit is similar to a Swiffer mop, there is a mop style head that holds disposable cotton like cloths.  These attach just like with the Swiffer mop, the wrap around the bottom of the mop head, and you push each corner into a small grabber hole that keeps the cloths firmly in place.  In order to get the cloth along the front of the head, you can lift the small narrow vacuum portion, then lay it flat to use the vacuum.

When using this to clean hard floors, it does a great job because the head of the vacuum and duster swivels, which allows you to get into tighter spaces.  The vacuum is quite powerful and it does an excellent job of edge cleaning along base boards.  Sometimes dirt gets behind the vacuum head, and this won't get picked up, you have to push the vacuum into or toward the dirt and dust in order to pick it up.

My daughter doesn't own a broom, so when the floors need to be cleaned this Swiffer Sweeper Vac is all I have.  The last time I used it the floors didn't look that dirty, but the cloth actually collected quite a bit of dirt and dust.  This tool gets into corners and under chair legs nicely.  It also has the ability to get under appliances such as refrigerators, ovens, and dishwashers!  A much easier way to sweep under appliances compared to using a broom.  I like that there are no cords to drag around and get in the way!

The company refers to the bags as filters, and these are quite small, but I can go one to two weeks before having to empty them.  The vacuum opens up and you pull out the cup shaped filter to empty.  (I pulled a little too hard the first time and dirt flew everywhere).

If you want a product that vacuums and sweeps hard floors, and don't mind spending the money for replacement parts such as the filter cups and the Swiffer pads, this is a good choice.  Of course it also uses some electricity, but I would imagine the amount it uses is quite small.

Replacement filters (or disposable bags) cost around $5.50 for a set of two, but they can be vacuumed clean using the hose of a full sized vacuum, allowing you to get much more use out of them.  The Swiffer Cloths come in boxes of 32, and retail for around $8.50.
