If you can't grow it...at least you can buy it

The Bottom Line: If you can't grow catnip yourself this is a good kind to buy.
I got cosmic catnip for my kittens to stuff into a sock and sew up for a toy. They say that cats don't respond to catnip till they're about a year old. My kittens were only 3 months old and they went nuts over it. I sprinkled it on their little carpeted hut and they ate it and played with it. It's so fun to watch them go nuts...as if they don't anyway.
I have one thing to say about buying catnip. I saw on Martha Stewart Living that you can grow the stuff in your garden. I haven't tried it because I don't have a garden yet (apartment) but as soon as I get a house I'm going to try it. That would be very cost effective since the plant wouldn't cost much and you'd only have to buy it once.
For the meantime I'll continue making catnip toys and feeding the kitties a bit of it. They say that it helps their digestion if you let them eat some once in a while. I don't know if there's any truth to that, though.
