| matbone's Full Review: Unitech UP-322 Rome II MP3 Player |
While I was looking for a solid MP3 player, I came across an article in Maxim magazine that reviewed the Rome player. This seemed like a perfect solution to all of my music listening woes. I could get a portable MP3 player that I could also listen to on my home or car stereo. I was tentative to purchase the Rome because there are no retail outlets to return it too if I have a problem. This was quite the expensive gamble ($300). I decided to roll the dice because of the sheer coolness of this device. Boy am I ever glad I took this risk. Not only does the Rome sound great, it is light and it plays unbelievably well in my Aiwa sound system and in my 1995 Jetta factory stereo. This MP3 player is also so light. I just slip it into any pocket and I practically forget it's there. It seems like the music is coming straight from the handy LCD remote. It also has 64 MB memory which is good for such a light player, plus an expandable flash card slot for at least another 64 MB's of listening pleasure.
There are only two minor problems I can think of concerning the Rome. The first is that you cannot access the remote when the device is in a tape player. This only limits equalizer control and the ability to fast forward or rewind within a song (you can still move from track to track by simply pressing fast forward or rewind on the tape player). The second problem is the earbuds that came with the Rome fall out of my ear. I accidentally broke these and now I am having a hard time finding headphones that sound as good as those did. One more slight problem that I do not even consider to be a real problem is that when you put the rome into a cassette deck be sure to adjust the volume accordingly on the device itself. If the volume on the rome is too high the volume control on the tape deck you are playing on will be too sensitive and this will distort the sound. In plain words: keep the sound on the Rome low when playing in tape decks. This allows you to blast your car/stereo speakers with much clearer sound.
So far the Rome is everything I hoped it would be. I am still a little concerned if I have a technical problem with it, but so far so good. I would recommend this MP3 player to anyone in the market. Even if it does not work in your tape decks and if tape decks become obsolete this still makes for a great stand alone MP3 player. Now if I can just find some good headphones.
