I think you're one of the select few. In a way I wouldn't even call it a sci-fi movie. It is more of a detective story that looks at what a human being...an intelligent life form really is. What makes us different and what makes us the same. Where is that line?

Interesting and well written list. :D

That was an interesting list... I couldn't help smiling when I saw The princess Mononoke and Spirited Away on it. That's the 4% we have in common!

50% agreement is pretty good, so I'll take that as a compliment.
As for work, I've conceptualized this a year ago and have been slowly working on it since then. So ya it was a lot of work. But my excel list will help me with my other top 10 review lists I'll post over the next 2-3 years.

I have seen 22 of these, and probably about half would make it to my top 50 list. This kinda makes me want to do one of my own, though I'm so bad at ranking things... Great write-up!

Alan,

Re Return of the Jedi: According to the making-of documentary Star Wars: Empire of Dreams, Lucas wanted Steven Spielberg to direct Episode VI, but his troubles with both the Writers' Guild and the Directors' Guild precluded that and he hired Marquand to helm Jedi. Lucas probably did direct some second-unit footage, but Marquand (who had been chosen because he had directed a World War II thriller Lucas liked) handled the main unit.

As for the LOTR "trilogy" thing. The books were indeed written as one unit, but the British publisher thought it would be easier and perhaps cheaper to simply break it up into three volumes, each with two "books" in them. Tolkien always thought of LOTR as one story and so, in all interviews that I've seen, does Jackson. Indeed, the dead giveaway is that The Return of the King is the only one with a THE END card.

About your friend's interpretation of The Empire Strikes Back leading nowhere....I assume she didn't understand that Episode V was intended to have only an emotional but not an actual climax, right? If it had had a definite ending, then there's no Episode VI needed.

I was under the impression that George did some directing in the 6th movie, but I can't find any evidence to back it up. So I guess you're correct and I'll make that change, thanks for pointing it out.
If you want to get nitpicky (just for fun) you can argue that "the trilogy" is really 6 stories shoved together to make one big story. According to my brother, the publisher is to blame for making it 3 books. But I do agree with your point.

thx for stopping by and making a comment, I look forward to your list.

Good list, though I do have a few points I'd like to touch regarding a few statements you made.

In your comment about The Empire Strikes Back you say it's the only Star Wars film that wasn't directed by George Lucas. This is incorrect; Lucas also did not direct Return of the Jedi, a British director named Richard Marquand did. (If we also add 2008's Star Wars: The Clone Wars movie that would be two that weren't directed by Lucas.)

The other comment is more of a nitpick and not a correction. Sure, Peter Jackson's The Lord of the Rings might be called a trilogy in the loosest of terms, but the director considers it to be a single film broken up, by necessity, into three separate installments.

Nice list, to be sure. Maybe someday I'll do one like this.

What a great list (Reply to this comment)

It is so refreshing to see Anime listed at the top. There are definitely a couple I need to add to my Netflix list.

Since you like Anime, you might check out the Pokemon movies (like Jirachi Wish Maker). Many write them off as kiddie movies, but they are much better than you might expect.

Also, there were one or two decent movies made before 1970. Check out My Man Godfrey, if you get a chance.

This was a very useful list. I've seen about half of them and I agree with you. I think we have similar taste. I am going to use your list as a guide in the near future (the other half).

Thanks

Ever see the Maltese Falcon or Key Largo with Humphrey Bogart? I think if you did they might make an appearance on your list.

Re: I.. (Reply to this comment)

I left this on your comments but I'll leave a copy here also.

To figure it out the best way is to go to my profile page and select "view source" and look at the html code.
A little ways down the list you will see some code for the different lists. I recommend that you just copy my code and paste it onto yours. The only things you will need to change is the html links (just copy over them with your links) and the display names.

The code you are looking for starts with form surrounded by < >. The select is the next line. The third line is option with the < symbol. The value is the web page, just make sure there is no number after the www, just delete the number if you see it. Like I said, copy and paste and learn by trial and error. Hope this helps.

P.S-Could you tell me how to link my reviews to a drop-down box on my about me? I can't figure it out. Just put your answer in a comment in my Red Robin review. 8-)

Thanks!

Re: Classics (Reply to this comment)
by yakkowarner
I've watched several classics that people recommended and they didn't make the list mainly because of pacing. While there are several good films (that scored a 4 and 5), I think they are a bit slow or they did not impact me emotionally as they do others.
Dr. Strangelove is one of those movies. While I enjoyed seeing it, I have no desire to see it again. Plus the emotional impact it had on the older generation was not imprinted on to me. The nuclear threat is not something that scares me.
The conversation is also a good film I never care to see again because of pacing. But it was the most captivating role I have seen Gene Hackman in, and I'm glad I saw this.
As I go through my netflix list I'll get to some of the older movies that I haven't seen since I was a child, or never saw at all, and of course modify the list. (sound of music, king and I, etc will be viewed sometime in the next year.)

thx for stoppin by,

I take it that you are not a fan of the classics. Movies like Gone With The Wind, The Sound of Music or The Wizard of Oz. I noticed you had nothing past the 70s.

Re: Yikes! (Reply to this comment)

Yes! I got someone to put some on their Queue.

That's part of the reason I put this list together is to give some exposure to some fun, yet underrated films. I certainly can't expect anyone to agree with me 100%, heck 50% is pretty hard. But if I get some people to think and put some on their queue than I've been successful. So thx.

Thanks for reading and leaving a comment. Feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions.

Holy Grail rocks!!

I went ahead and made a spreadsheet with all of my movies reviewed including my score, genre, and year released. I will be using this to do some other top ten lists by year and genre (part of the reason I put that extraneous information on my reviews over the past year.) So ya it was a lot of work. But from the comments so far, it was worth it. If I get people to think and rent a couple of these then I have been successful. Especially if I convert some more Miyazaki fans.

Definitely.

I was actually conflicted about how to rate last crusade until I watched it critically again. And I have to agree, it is underrated. It's a fun movie but a lot more is going on besides action which is why I put it there.

Out of your top 50, I've seen probably 20 of these and liked only about 6 of them. LOL! I enjoyed reading this anyway. I'm going to add a few of them to my Netflix queue, as they look interesting.

Great job here!

That took a LOT of work!! Writing the initial reviews, of course...but then going and compiling this.

Clearly, sci-fi, anime & comedy are what you love. Not too much in the way of drama, indie films, etc. But it's clear you LOVE movies...and that's what's important.

Also, any top list featuring HOLY GRAIL near the top has got to be Very Helpful!!

An interesting list. Some movies I've seen and loved, some movies I haven't seen at all, and some movies I've seen and wouldn't include on my own favorite films list (but that's ok, cuz this isn't my list). Just fyi, you may want to take another look at number 44, which is showing as "about:blank."

A bit too much anime fanboy stuff for me, but there are a LOT of my faves here- Raiders, T2, etc, and nice to see some love going to Indy and the Last Crusade, an underrated film. Probably the most interesting Top movies list I've seen on this site thus far.

of link problems.

Since it is your list, the total lack of overlap with either my favorite list or ten-best list is not a problem.
