Taking care of poppa . . . || Gifting Dad on his day...
Jun 15 '09
The Bottom Line Any father worth his salt will feel challenged to understand the world around him and his place, and his children's place, in that world.
... The idea of creating a day to honor Dad, forging a day to 'gift him' with tokens of love and respect seems almost an artificial construct.
The bonding of child with mother seems a natural affection. While the same affection of child for father seems more forced and unnatural. I think even the child knows who 'mother' is. While establishing who is 'father' requires more active intervention by both father and child.
Of course, it has been a long time since my college psych class . . .and I may have been sleeping that day. As I remember, it was an early morning class.
Part of my own anxiety (if it were characterized as that) about Father's Day is my own lack of personal experience interacting with my father as an adult. My father died while I was away from home, serving in the military.
Within weeks of graduating high school and two short weeks after my eighteenth birthday I was gone from home. I saw my family, my parents, my dad only only a couple of short weekends in between training assignment moves over the next two years. Then he was gone.
I always envied my friends who still had their father in their lives. It was odd meeting their parents now and then; odd seeing my friends interact with their fathers.
.
.
Anyway. Makes me wonder about my own kids and the kind of father I am for them. After all, I have never had any practice in this father-son adult interaction thing...
Ahh, the business at hand. Father's Day gift recommendations.
While I have not given many Father's Day gifts I have received more than a few. Always popular as a gift for dad, for me, was any book about science, history, or sports. Especially baseball books.
Below are a few books, movies, and other products that I have reviewed here. Among them I think you might find more than a few highly-rated gifts (at least by me) that will match the interests of almost any dad out there.
Sports-related gifts As suggested above, anything sports-related (well, almost...) will please me. As the selections below indicate. With just a mild Chicago Cubs undertone.
Cubs Forever:... || A celebration of baseball, the Chicago Cubs & WGN-TV...
The Heckler || ' Life as sports fans in Chicago '
Sports Illustrated: The 50th Anniversary Book || ahh ...sweet memories...
The woman in your Dad's life These might be more appropriate for Dad to pick out for himself. Or maybe Mom trying to give her partner a little recharge...
Bonk:... || Science, sex, and enjoying your 'naughty bits'...
The Naked Woman || Your guide to great sex..!! ...not.
40 unforgettable dates with your mate ~~ Love in the Twenty-First Century w/o
The history buff dad These are just a few products that will help Dad explore the origin of the United States of America and where we might be headed today. Always a concern for a dad who is raising the citizens of the next genreation The Intellectual Devotional: American History || 365 days of pleasure... Founding Brothers || the first Americans...
The Signers: The 56 Stories Behind the Declaration of Independence
A few random products for that hard-to-shop-for dad. Just of few of my favorite reviews that are backed up by great products that any dad might like and value Nine Innings from Ground Zero || Oil and water
"Last Man Down" ...Last job done. Treasure Island || A treasure indeed...
The Last Lecture || Do you have an end-game plan..?? Route 66: The Mother Road || Get your kicks on... .
